Alex de Minaur Shares Injury Update After Reaching Shanghai Masters Quarterfinals

Alex de Minaur Advances to 10th ATP Masters 1000 Quarterfinal

Alex de Minaur secured his spot in the quarterfinals of the Shanghai Masters by defeating Karen Khachanov with a 6-3, 6-4 victory. This marks De Minaur's 10th appearance in an ATP Masters 1000 quarterfinal. With the ATP Finals in Turin coming up next month, the Australian is pushing hard to qualify.

He now awaits the winner of the match between Alexander Zverev and Alexander Bublik for his next opponent.

Injury Update After China Open Retirement

De Minaur entered the Shanghai tournament after retiring hurt during his China Open final against Novak Djokovic. At that time, he was down 6-7(3-7), 1-0. He has been recovering from a groin injury since then.

Asked about his current movement and confidence amid the injury, De Minaur said, "Yeah, it's been feeling better and better every single day. It's been seven to eight days since that match, and there's been a lot of focus on recovery. I've been doing everything I can to improve daily. Today was definitely the best day so far. I combined that with strong tennis, good serving, and smart tactics. Overall, it was a clean match, and I'm really happy with that."

Key Moments Against Khachanov

Discussing some of the winning shots that helped him secure the win, including his backhand winners, De Minaur added, "In the first set, I hit a big winner to break. There were several other big shots throughout the match where I trusted myself. If I let him take control, he's extremely dangerous. It was important for me to be the one making him move first and then play out the point from there."

Looking Ahead to Tough Opponents

De Minaur faces a challenging next round against either the top seed Alexander Zverev or 19th seed Alexander Bublik. Previewing the matchup, he said, "Zverev is the world number one, having played incredibly all year with massive confidence—definitely the most in-form player. Bublik has the ability to beat anyone on any given day. I'm looking forward to watching their match and seeing what unfolds."

  • Head-to-head: De Minaur is 4-8 against Zverev
  • Head-to-head: De Minaur is 4-2 against Bublik

Earlier, De Minaur defeated qualifier Rei Sakamoto to reach this stage. Should he advance further, possible semifinal opponents include Arthur Gea, Jakub Mensik, Hubert Hurkacz, or Alejandro Davidovich Fokina. Potential finalists could be Casper Ruud, Felix Auger-Aliassime, or Daniil Medvedev.
