Arda Güler's Real Madrid Contract Extension: A Major Step Up
Real Madrid have moved decisively to lock down one of their brightest assets. Arda Güler, still only 21, is set to sign a huge contract extension that will keep him at the Bernabéu for at least another seven years – and possibly eight.
Spanish outlet AS first revealed on Thursday that talks were progressing well. Within hours, transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano went further, reporting that Madrid had reached full agreement with Güler’s camp on every detail of the deal.
The agreement is expected to run until at least 2031. Romano even claims the contract stretches to 2032. If that proves correct, Güler will join a very exclusive group inside the Madrid dressing room. Only summer signing Yan Diomande, brought in for a hefty €125 million fee, is tied down longer, with a deal that runs to 2033.
For Güler, it is more than just a signature. It is confirmation that he now belongs to the club’s inner circle.
From €28m gamble to €90m headline act
When Madrid moved for Güler in the summer of 2023, plucking him from Fenerbahce, they paid €28 million to win the race for his signature. At the time, it was a bold investment in potential. A year on, it looks like a bargain.
His market value has rocketed to around €90 million. No other Turkish footballer comes close. Güler sits alone at the top of that particular ranking, the standard-bearer for a new generation.
The club’s hierarchy clearly recognise that status. His previous salary, reported at around €5 million per year, is understood to be in line for a major upgrade as part of the new agreement. Madrid are paying him like a star because he is playing like one.
Contract length for a cornerstone
Güler’s original Madrid contract was due to run until 2029. That already looked generous for a teenager arriving from the Turkish league. The new terms blow that out of the water.
A commitment through 2031 – and potentially 2032 – is the kind of horizon Madrid usually reserve for players they see as long-term pillars of the project. Diomande is one. Güler is now firmly in that bracket.
It is also a clear message to Europe’s elite: there will be no opportunistic move for the Turk any time soon. If anyone wants him, they will be dealing with a player on a peak-market contract, embedded at one of the game’s superclubs.
Step by step to indispensability
The extension has not come on reputation alone. Güler has earned it on the pitch.
Last season, he pieced together the kind of campaign that quietly changes a manager’s plans. Across 51 competitive appearances, he produced 20 goal involvements. He did it while growing into the team, nudging his way from impact substitute to regular starter.
As the months passed, his influence grew. The left-footer began to dictate games in the final third, threading passes, drifting into pockets, and delivering the numbers to back up the eye test. The more he played, the harder he became to leave out.
The arrival of Jose Mourinho this summer could have altered that trajectory. A new coach often means a reset, new favourites, fresh hierarchies. Instead, Güler has doubled down.
Mourinho’s trust, Güler’s response
Under Mourinho, the attacking midfielder has started three of Real Madrid’s first four league matches. Each time, he has responded with a goal and an assist. Not just flashes, but end product. Not just promise, but proof.
That kind of consistency, so early in the season and under a demanding new manager, carries weight. It tells you why Madrid moved quickly to close the deal. They are not speculating on what Güler might become in three years. They are rewarding what he is already delivering now, and betting he can go higher.
Only a suspension has checked his early-season momentum. A red card from last year ruled him out of the 2-1 Champions League win over Inter Milan, forcing him to watch from the sidelines as his teammates opened their European campaign without him.
He will be back on that stage soon enough, this time with a contract that reflects his standing.
Madrid have tied down a player whose value has already tripled since he walked through the door. The next question is no longer whether Arda Güler belongs at this level. It is how far he can drag the ceiling of this Real Madrid side with him.
