Arsenal's Champions League Draw and New Rules Impact
Arsenal know the field. They just won’t be seeing the San Siro.
After the final round of Champions League qualifiers in midweek, every possible opponent for Mikel Arteta’s side in the new League Phase is now locked in. The names are set, the pots are fixed, and all that’s left is the draw – and one intriguing new twist in the rulebook.
Draw day looms
UEFA will stage the draw on Thursday, August 27 at 17:00 BST, the moment when Arsenal’s European roadmap for 2026/27 finally takes shape. By Saturday, August 29 at the latest, the full fixture list – dates, kick-off times, the lot – will be out, with UEFA promising a heads-up on their social media channels just before the schedule drops.
Arsenal enter as Premier League champions, which puts them in Pot 1. Under the new Champions League format, though, that status is more about prestige than protection.
The structure is clear and unforgiving. Every club in the League Phase faces:
- two teams from Pot 1
- two from Pot 2
- two from Pot 3
- two from Pot 4
One at home, one away in each case. No soft landings, no gentle groups. Just eight games against a spread of Europe’s elite and hopefuls.
Domestic clashes are off the table at this stage, so Arsenal will be kept apart from Liverpool, Manchester City, Aston Villa and Manchester United until the knockouts. The Premier League’s heavyweights are separated now, only to be thrown together later when the stakes are higher and the margins finer.
But it’s a different regulation that really catches the eye.
The San Siro shut-out
Under a new UEFA rule, clubs cannot play the same League Phase fixture three seasons in a row. Arsenal’s recent history with Inter Milan triggers that clause.
The Gunners travelled to face Inter in both the 2024/25 and 2025/26 League Phases. Two straight seasons, same away tie, same iconic venue. That’s enough for UEFA to step in.
So in 2026/27, Arsenal are barred from playing away to Inter. A third consecutive trip to the San Siro is off-limits.
It doesn’t remove Inter from the equation entirely. The Italian side can still be drawn against Arsenal – but only for a game at the Emirates Stadium. The badge, the rivalry, the narrative can all return. The famous Milanese arena cannot.
For supporters, it’s a quirk that cuts both ways. No glamour night in one of Europe’s great cathedrals of football, but a potential marquee tie in north London instead, with all the noise and colour of the Emirates on a Champions League evening.
Pot 1, but no comfort zone
Arsenal’s presence in Pot 1 underlines their domestic dominance, yet the revamped format strips away much of the old seeding safety net. Being top-seeded no longer guarantees a favourable path. You still collide with power from every tier.
The club’s potential opponents stretch across all four pots, the exact identities already confirmed even if the pairings are not. The only certainties right now are the restrictions: no English opponents, no away day at Inter.
Everything else is up to the draw.
The anticipation now hangs over those few minutes in Nyon on August 27. Eight games will define Arsenal’s League Phase, shape their route to the knockouts and test the depth of a squad built to compete on multiple fronts.
They know who they can face. They know where they cannot go.
The question is simple: when the balls are pulled and the fixtures land, will this campaign feel like an ascent to Europe’s summit, or another brutal examination of just how far this Arsenal side has really come?
