For days, the clues seemed to point in a familiar direction.
Lukeba: admired, tracked… but off the table
Once it emerged that Barcelona were targeting a left-footed centre-back who does not currently play in Spain and is not a household name for casual fans, many immediately circled one candidate: Castello Lukeba.
The RB Leipzig defender has been on Barcelona’s radar. Flick is said to rate the Frenchman’s ability to operate both as a centre-back and as a left-back, a tactical flexibility that fits perfectly with modern demands on defenders. On paper, he looked like the archetype of the operation.
But that theory has now been shut down.
Matteo Moretto has made Barcelona’s stance crystal clear: Lukeba is not the player the club are working to sign. The journalist went as far as to rule out the Leipzig defender’s profile “100%”, a definitive line through a name many assumed was front and centre in the Catalans’ plans.
It is not a question of quality. Lukeba brings pace, intelligence in the defensive line and comfort on the ball, particularly on the left side — exactly the sort of attributes that would help Barcelona address an area they have been trying to reinforce for some time. The fit looked logical. The reality is different.
Barcelona’s search is headed elsewhere.
Not the obvious names
This is not simply a case of picking from the usual transfer-market carousel. Barcelona are not just browsing the top shelf of well-known, heavily linked defenders.
The message coming from Moretto’s information is that the club’s sporting department is deliberately moving away from the most obvious profiles, instead building an operation around a considerably less high-profile target. The intention is clear: work in silence, avoid a bidding war, and land a defender who fits the internal criteria rather than the media narrative.
And it is not only Lukeba who has been crossed off the list.
Goncalo Inacio also ruled out
Goncalo Inacio, long touted as one of Europe’s most promising left-footed centre-backs and regularly linked with Barcelona, is also not part of the current plan.
The Sporting CP defender has been another recurring name whenever Barcelona’s need for a left-sided centre-back has been discussed. His profile, like Lukeba’s, ticks many boxes: young, left-footed, comfortable in possession, experienced at a high level.
Yet Moretto’s comments indicate that Inacio, too, can be ruled out of this particular search.
The key detail lies in recognition. The defender Barcelona are actively working on is described as less widely known than both Lukeba and Inacio. That single piece of information explains a lot: the absence of concrete leaks, the lack of daily speculation, the mystery surrounding the identity of the player.
Barcelona, it seems, are determined to keep this deal under wraps for as long as possible.
