Brian Sorensen Joins Republic of Ireland Women’s Team for World Cup Qualifiers
Brian Sorensen is stepping back into the international spotlight – this time in green.
The former Everton manager is set to join the Republic of Ireland women’s setup as assistant coach for their Women’s World Cup play-off qualifiers later this year, adding a seasoned touchline presence at a crucial juncture in their campaign.
Sorensen will work alongside Liverpool coach Amber Whiteley on the Ireland staff, forming a new-look support team as the squad prepares for a high-stakes autumn. The move gives Ireland an experienced WSL tactician at a time when every decision, every adjustment, could shape their route to the tournament.
He will retain his role as technical director with Aston Villa Women, but will link up with the national team during international windows. It’s a dual responsibility that underlines his growing influence in the women’s game and Ireland’s determination to tap into elite club expertise.
There is also a familiar face at the heart of this new alliance. Sorensen will be part of a backroom team led by Carla Ward, the Republic of Ireland manager who previously locked horns with him in the Women’s Super League when she was in charge of Villa and he of Everton. Those battles on opposite benches now become shared strategy sessions, with both coaches bringing intimate knowledge of the English top flight into the international arena.
Upcoming Challenge
The assignment in front of them is clear and unforgiving.
Ireland face Kazakhstan in the first round of World Cup play-off qualifying, a two-legged tie scheduled for 9 and 13 October. Across those four days, the tone of Ireland’s entire campaign could be set. For Sorensen, it’s an immediate test: no bedding-in period, no gentle introduction. Just knockout football, and the demand to deliver.
