Fabio Vieira Completes Permanent Move to Hamburg

Fabio Vieira’s Arsenal chapter is over. The Portuguese midfielder has completed a permanent move to Hamburg, signing for the Bundesliga club in a deal worth 10m euros (£8.6m).

It is a transfer that has felt inevitable for some time. Vieira has effectively been living on the fringes of Arsenal’s project for the past two seasons, farmed out on loan first to Porto in 2024-25 and then to Hamburg last year. Germany suited him. Hamburg liked what they saw. Now they have paid to keep him.

Vieira arrived in north London from Porto in 2022 as a technical, creative option for Mikel Arteta, a player expected to thread passes through tight lines and offer guile between the lines. He leaves with 49 appearances to his name, flashes of quality, but without ever fully dislodging the established core of Arsenal’s midfield.

Arsenal, locked into another summer of ruthless squad shaping, had made him available for sale. He was one of several names on the list. The club are also prepared to cash in on forwards Gabriel Jesus and Gabriel Martinelli, with both expected to depart on permanent deals as the hierarchy trims the wage bill and reshapes the attack.

The exits are not only about clearing space. They are about clearing a pathway.

At the other end of the age spectrum, academy product Ethan Nwaneri is closing in on a loan move to Borussia Dortmund. The teenager, long tipped as one of the brightest talents in Arsenal’s youth ranks, looks set to follow a well-trodden route for elite prospects: a season in the Bundesliga, in a club renowned for trusting young players on big stages.

So Arsenal move into the new campaign with another senior face gone, more big decisions looming over two Brazilian forwards, and a gifted teenager preparing to test himself in Dortmund. The squad is being stripped back, recalibrated, pushed towards something leaner and sharper.
