Florian Wirtz Responds to Jamie Carragher's Criticism After Key Role in Liverpool Win

Florian Wirtz has pushed back against harsh critiques from former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher after helping Liverpool secure a win against Brighton at Anfield under coach Andoni Iraola.

Wirtz Faces Pressure but Keeps Focus

Since joining Liverpool for a club-record £116.5 million from Bayer Leverkusen in summer 2025, the German midfielder has been under intense scrutiny. Despite inconsistent performances, Wirtz remains determined not to be distracted by doubters.

His decisive moment came when his powerful shot deflected off Pascal Gross, opening the scoring against Brighton. This set the stage for teammate Bradley Barcola to assist Alexander Isak, securing the victory.

In a post-match interview with the BBC, Wirtz joked, "Maybe I'm just an interesting guy, you know?" The 23-year-old, who struggled for rhythm during his first season under Arne Slot, seems revitalized in the current setup. He currently has one goal and three assists this campaign and aims to silence critics with improved performances.

He added, "I just play my football, and if people want to talk about me or judge me, that's their job. I am not focusing on that. I just want to play football, and more, I cannot do."

Praise for Team's Dominant First Half

Wirtz highlighted the team’s strong mentality and control in the early stages of the match. He noted how Liverpool dominated duels, created numerous chances, and combined attacking pace with solid defense to end the half confidently.

"We had the right mentality today. In the first half or first 30 minutes, we were on top of them and really good in the duels, creating a lot of chances. It's good to end the half and we defended well. Really happy about that," Wirtz said.

He reflected on recent struggles, saying, "Many things weren’t so good last month, so I’m even happier that it’s going well now. We’re on the right path to where we want to be. We should keep going like this, and I’m happy about that."

Carragher Remains Critical

Jamie Carragher has been the loudest critic of Wirtz’s impact at Liverpool. After a disappointing loss to Manchester City earlier in the season, Carragher questioned whether the club got value for the hefty transfer fee.

"There is no way Wirtz should be playing ahead of Gravenberch. What Florian Wirtz is doing for Liverpool is not enough right now. He’s played 55, 60 games for Liverpool. He shouldn’t be in the Liverpool team right now. I don’t want to hammer Liverpool players. But we’re not saying this after five-ten games, we’re saying this after 50-60 games," Carragher stated.

Injury Concern at Anfield

The win was slightly overshadowed when Wirtz had to leave the pitch early due to an injury. After receiving treatment on the field, he was substituted in the 65th minute, raising concerns among fans.

Trey Nyoni replaced him as medical staff conducted checks on the sidelines during the final moments of the game.

Coach Andoni Iraola updated on the injury, noting the challenge of a packed schedule. "He had a small twist of the ankle. It doesn’t look very big but we are playing every three days, so we need to see where he is," Iraola said.
