Gabriel Jesus: Napoli's Top Target as Transfer Window Closes
Gabriel Jesus has become the quiet centre of one of the window’s most intriguing late stories.
In London, he is training alone. In Naples, he remains the striker Massimiliano Allegri wants more than any other.
Allegri’s first choice
Gianluca Di Marzio reports that Napoli are still pushing to add a forward before the window shuts, running through a list of possibilities. The name at the top hasn’t changed: Gabriel Jesus.
Other options are being checked, calls are being made, but Allegri’s preference is clear. If Napoli can unlock a deal with Arsenal, Jesus is the man he wants leading his line.
The Italian club had expected the path to clear earlier this month. When Fenerbahce struck an agreement to sign Romelu Lukaku from Napoli, it looked like the first crucial exit that would free up room – financially and tactically – for a move for Jesus. The dominoes seemed ready to fall.
They haven’t. Not yet.
Jesus on his own, Arteta’s explanation
While the talks drag on, Jesus finds himself in an unusual position at Arsenal. He is currently training away from the main group, a separation that immediately fuelled speculation over his future.
Mikel Arteta framed it differently.
"It's something to do with the numbers that we have in the squad at the moment and the way we're managing that kind of situation individually with all the players – they have some personal situations," the Arsenal manager said, stressing that he has spoken directly with the Brazilian.
"Yes, for sure (he's spoken to Jesus). Those conversations go both ways, but I'm very satisfied with how these conversations went because I know what is in each other's hearts.
"The words that come through in those conversations make me really happy. It's inevitable at some point you need to have certain discussions and say certain things that sometimes are tough."
The message is carefully balanced: empathy in public, hard decisions in private. The reality is that a senior forward, out of contract next year, is on his own programme while the club weigh up a significant sale.
Napoli wait, Arsenal push
Earlier reports suggested Jesus himself had shown some hesitation over a move to Napoli. Whether his stance has softened is still unclear, and that uncertainty hangs over the whole operation.
Napoli, for their part, are keeping the line open while also protecting themselves by assessing alternatives. They know Allegri wants Jesus. They also know they cannot afford to be left without a new striker if the Brazilian ultimately says no.
Arsenal’s position is more straightforward. With Jesus’ deal running down and just a year left on his contract, this window is their last realistic chance to cash in. The club appear ready to do exactly that, working in these final days to turn a complicated situation into a clean exit and a substantial fee.
The clock is ticking on all sides. Allegri still sees Jesus as the ideal fit. Arsenal see an opportunity they may not get again. The player stands between those two forces, training alone, waiting to see which way his career breaks in the final hours of the summer.
