Gasperini: Roma Ready to Measure Up Against Inter
Gian Piero Gasperini has never been one to hide from a challenge, and he certainly is not ducking this one. On the eve of a heavyweight clash with Inter, the Italian coach framed the meeting not as a threat, but as a litmus test of how far his Roma have come since last season’s bruising.
“We have a few days to prepare,” he told DAZN Italia, weighing every word. “There was a big gap between the teams last season, especially when we got hammered in the return meeting, but that was where the real Roma was born, with an escalation after that in terms of results, attitude and mentality.”
That heavy defeat still lingers in the background, the kind of loss that can split a campaign in two. For Gasperini, it did. Roma hardened. They grew nastier, more competitive, more sure of themselves. The coach has turned that humiliation into a reference point – not of inferiority, but of rebirth.

“Clearly, Inter are the reference point for this league,” he continued. “A strong team indicated by everyone as the best in Italy, even if I think Como are getting close. It is an opportunity for us to measure up against the best and show we can do better than in recent performances.”
There is no attempt to downplay Inter’s status. They are the standard. The team everyone else must chase. Gasperini knows that, says it out loud, and then sets his own demand: Roma must prove they belong on that level, not just in rhetoric but across 90 unforgiving minutes.
Malen at the heart of Roma’s new edge

The club’s €25 million decision to buy him outright from Aston Villa in May 2026 already looks like a bargain. His loan spell had hinted at this outcome – 15 goals in 20 appearances, a blur of movement and ruthless finishing that forced Roma’s hand in the market. They did not hesitate. Nor has he.
This season, he has picked up exactly where he left off. Six goals already, and with them a slice of club history. The Dutch forward has become only the third player in Roma’s history to score more than five times in the opening four Serie A matches, standing alongside Pedro Manfredini’s exploits in 1960-61 and Francesco Totti’s surge in 2001-02.
Those are not just names. They are eras. To be mentioned in that company at Roma is to be woven into a demanding lineage of goalscorers who carried the side’s ambitions on their shoulders.
Malen is now doing the same. His clinical edge has become the focal point of Gasperini’s tactical design in the final third.
