Harry Kane set to extend Bayern contract as United's hopes fade

Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s ideal Manchester United centre-forward looks set to remain out of reach – and off the market – for a long time yet.

United’s new co-owner is known to be a huge admirer of Harry Kane and has been monitoring the England captain’s situation at Bayern Munich. Kane’s current deal runs out at the end of the season, and interest from Old Trafford has never been a secret. Internally, United are understood to be willing to explore a move if the door ever opened.

It is about to slam shut.

Back on August 10, transfer insider Graeme Bailey revealed that United were among the clubs keen on testing Bayern’s resolve, with Ratcliffe particularly enthused by the idea of bringing one of the game’s elite No.9s to Old Trafford. Kane, the former Tottenham Hotspur talisman, has long been viewed by many at United as the perfect ready-made solution to their goalscoring issues.

The problem? Kane has never really looked like a man itching to leave Bavaria.

Bailey reported at the time that the striker’s preference was to stay at Bayern, and the German champions have moved decisively to make that happen. The club are ready to table a new three-year contract for the 33-year-old, a deal that would carry him well beyond 2026 and cement him as the face of their attack for the foreseeable future.

Now the German media are closing in on the key detail United did not want to hear: a timeline.

According to Bild journalist Christian Falk, speaking on his CFBayernInsider platform, Bayern expect clarity very soon. Kane was named “football star of the year” at the Sport Bild Awards, appearing live via Zoom while his father, Pat, attended the ceremony in Hamburg’s Fischauktionshalle. It was there Falk sounded out Bayern president Herbert Hainer about the club’s confidence.

The mood around the Bayern hierarchy? Calm. Almost casual.

“Everyone was saying, ‘relax’; everyone thinks a new contract will just be a matter of time,” Falk reported.

There are still details to iron out, questions to be cleared up in the talks, but inside the club there is a strong belief that agreement is coming.

The pressure of the ticking clock, though, is minimal. Bayern are not scrambling. They are planning.

Falk expects the formal announcement on Kane’s future to land next month, stressing that it will “absolutely” arrive this year rather than dragging into the next. He is “really sure” the striker will sign an extension that runs beyond 2026, effectively locking him in as Bayern’s leading man through the back end of his prime.

If that happens, the implications are blunt for United and anyone else harbouring hopes.

“Then, Harry Kane is off the market for every other club for a long time,” Falk concluded, before addressing Old Trafford directly with a pointed line: “Sorry again to his long-time admirers, Manchester United!”

For Ratcliffe, who has openly targeted elite, ready-made quality to accelerate United’s rebuild, the message is clear. The Kane fantasy that has hovered over multiple transfer windows is on the verge of becoming just that – a fantasy. The search for United’s next great centre-forward will have to look elsewhere.
