Julian Alvarez has not reported for Atletico Madrid training for two straight days, and the message from the club could not be clearer: if he wants out, he will have to look to London, not Barcelona.

Earlier this week, Atletico privately informed Alvarez and his advisors that they would not enter talks with Barcelona over a transfer for the Argentina international. That stance has since been hammered home in public.
On Wednesday, after Barcelona president Joan Laporta reiterated his desire to sign Alvarez, Atletico responded with a blunt statement: “There is 0% chance of selling him to Barca.”
Twenty-four hours later, the board went even further, issuing another declaration of support for the decision, saying the directors had “unanimously expressed their absolute support for the club's decision to not negotiate the transfer of Julian Alvarez to FC Barcelona.”
The message to Barcelona is uncompromising. So is the message to the player.
Illness, absence and a stand-off
Since being told Barca is off the table, the 26-year-old has missed two consecutive training sessions, citing illness. The timing is impossible to ignore.
Alvarez has made it clear he wants Barcelona. Atletico have made it just as clear that this is the one deal they will not do. The result is a stand-off with the club’s pre-season rhythm now overshadowed by a striker who is physically absent but central to every conversation.
Arsenal emerge as the only escape route

Atleti are prepared to sell Alvarez to the Premier League champions and have already held direct talks over what would be one of the headline transfers of the summer window. Club director Mateu Alemany travelled to London last week, meeting Arsenal officials and outlining Atletico’s demands: a fee of 150m euros (£128m).
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta is pushing hard to bring Alvarez to north London this month. The club’s interest is serious, the negotiations described as positive, and there is a sense that the framework of a club-to-club agreement is within reach.
One problem: Alvarez’s heart is set on Barcelona.
That preference has slowed Arsenal’s pursuit, leaving the English champions in the unusual position of being both the only viable option and not yet the player’s chosen destination.
Decision time for Alvarez
For now, the situation hangs on one decision. If Alvarez gives Arsenal the green light in the coming days, those close to the talks expect the deal to accelerate quickly. The money is on the table, the selling club is willing, the buying club is ready.
What remains unclear is whether the player is prepared to abandon his Barcelona dream and accept a move engineered not by his wishes, but by the hard line of Atletico’s hierarchy.
