Kelsey Mitchell Breaks WNBA Scoring Record in Intense Race with A’ja Wilson
Kelsey Mitchell didn’t just keep her historic season rolling on Friday night. She pushed it into territory no WNBA player has ever seen.
Midway through the third quarter against the Toronto Tempo, the Indiana Fever guard rose up from deep and buried a three. On the stat sheet, it was just another jumper in another high-volume night.
In the record books, it was everything.
That shot moved Mitchell to 1,023 points for the season, nudging her past A’ja Wilson’s single-season mark of 1,021 set in 2024 and establishing a new WNBA standard for scoring in a year. One bucket, one moment, and the all-time record changed hands.
A streak that won’t cool off
The three-pointer also carried another layer of history. It pushed Mitchell to 22 points on the night and stretched her streak of consecutive 20-point games to 25. No one in league history has strung together scoring nights quite like this.
Wilson had owned that particular record too, with 20 straight 20-point games across the 2023 and 2024 seasons. Mitchell has blown past it, and she hasn’t dipped below 15 points in a single outing all year.
Every night, the same pattern: defenses load up, Mitchell shrugs them off, and the scoreboard tilts her way.
This is no one-off surge, either. The 2026 campaign marks the third straight season Mitchell has increased her scoring output. She came into Friday averaging 25.0 points per game, second-best in the league and the backbone of Indiana’s playoff push.
Wilson still sets the pace per night
Wilson, though, hasn’t gone anywhere. The Las Vegas Aces star still leads the WNBA in scoring average at 26.1 points per game, the most punishing per-night force in the league.
An early-season ankle injury cost her three games and, with them, a shot at keeping pace in total points. That absence opened the door for Mitchell to surge ahead in the raw numbers, even as Wilson continues to outscore the field on a per-game basis.
The result is a rare sight: two players in the same season not only chasing the scoring title, but also standing alone in a club of their own. Mitchell and Wilson are the only players in WNBA history to crack 1,000 points in a single season. Now they’re locked in a race to see who finishes on top.
A scoring duel with playoff stakes
Wilson started Friday just 10 points behind Mitchell in total scoring, 1,001 to 991, despite Las Vegas having already played one more game than Indiana. Every possession from here on out carries weight — for the record books and for the standings.
Both stars are expected to play out the final three games of the regular season as their teams jostle for playoff position. Las Vegas entered the night at 28–13, one game ahead of the Fever (26–14) in the loss column.
For Indiana, the stakes are clear. A win would pull the Fever level with the Atlanta Dream for the No. 4 seed, the line that separates those who open the postseason at home from those who start on the road.
Mitchell has already turned this season into a personal milestone reel. Now the question is whether her relentless scoring can drag Indiana up the bracket while she fends off Wilson in one of the most compelling scoring races the league has ever seen.
