Lionel Messi Honored by River Plate as His Argentina Career Ends at Monumental
Messi Becomes Honorary Member of River Plate in Emotional Farewell
Lionel Messi was officially named an honorary member of River Plate during his final international match on home soil, held at the iconic Estadio Monumental. This special recognition came just before Argentina’s friendly against Benin, marking a deeply emotional moment for both the player and the club.
Historic Recognition Before Kick-Off
Moments prior to kickoff, River Plate officials inducted Messi as an honorary club member in a private ceremony inside the stadium’s Presidential Office. Stefano Di Carlo presented Messi with an institutional membership card, a commemorative plaque, and a unique 125th-anniversary jersey emblazoned with Messi’s name and the famous No. 10.
Respect from the Buenos Aires Giants
The accolade came on behalf of all Los Millonarios members and fans, a tribute to Messi’s incredible career and dedication to Argentine football. Di Carlo expressed the club’s deep appreciation for Messi’s more than 20 years of representing Argentina in sky blue and white, highlighting the respect he commands as a defining figure in the nation’s modern football history.
A Lasting Bond with the Monumental
The Estadio Monumental has been central to Messi’s international journey since his debut goal there against Uruguay in 2008. It became his most productive venue at home, where he scored 19 goals in 28 matches, including notable hat-tricks against Bolivia. The farewell match saw Messi shine once again with a goal and two assists, helping Argentina secure a 3-0 win over Benin in front of a packed stadium.
Looking Ahead to MLS Challenges
With his international chapter now closed, Messi will return to the US to rejoin Inter Miami CF. At 39, he faces the challenge of maintaining peak fitness through the remaining domestic season as Miami aims for a strong position heading into the MLS Cup play-offs. His presence will be crucial for the team during this critical period leading up to the knockout stages.
