Lisandro Martinez Criticizes Manchester United's Leadership After Atletico Defeat
Lisandro Martinez Confronts Manchester United's Board Following Loss to Atletico Madrid
Lisandro Martinez delivered a scathing critique of Manchester United's management in a heated live TV interview after their 2-0 defeat against Atletico Madrid on Tuesday night.
The Red Devils have managed just two wins in nine matches across all competitions this season, raising doubts about Michael Carrick’s future amid growing frustration. The team fell behind within the first minute at the Wanda Metropolitano and, despite several attempts to recover, they couldn’t overturn the deficit. A controversial red card for Leny Yoro in the 74th minute worsened their plight, allowing Ademola Lookman to secure Atletico’s victory.
Carrick’s position seems increasingly unstable, but Martinez’s fierce remarks after the game suggest the players might blame issues beyond the coaching staff.
Martinez Targets Recruitment and Club Leadership
Since Sir Alex Ferguson’s era ended, no manager has lasted more than two full seasons at Old Trafford, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer holding the record between 2018 and 2021. Managers who take charge often face an uphill battle from the start. Martinez pointed directly at the club’s recruitment strategy after the latest setback, stating:
"I have to control myself a lot, but sometimes it is a reflection on the club at the moment. We had a fantastic season last year, and now we expect more from the top. We needed more players to compete because many teams brought others in as well.""I expect more. Yes, 100 percent. I expected more investment over the summer. I expect more from our technical director, to be honest."
When asked about areas that need strengthening, Martinez added:
"I think in general. Last season, we built a base for an amazing team, but we haven’t followed through. Carrick does his best, but every season is different. Everyone understands our style and system now. If we don’t change, that’s a big problem. You can keep changing managers, but what about other areas?"
Wayne Rooney Responds to Martinez’s Comments
During Amazon Prime’s coverage, Wayne Rooney expressed concern that Martinez’s remarks showed disrespect towards his teammates. The former United star said:
"He’s disrespecting his teammates. It’s not going to help the situation at the club right now."
The turmoil around United appears to extend off the pitch too. While the dressing room's full sentiment remains unclear, longtime observers suspect the club's problems are deep-rooted and unlikely to be resolved soon.
