Luis Enrique Pushes PSG to Equal Real Madrid's Champions League Threepeat
Luis Enrique Sets Ambitious Target for Paris Saint-Germain
Luis Enrique, the head coach of Paris Saint-Germain, has issued a bold challenge for his team to match Real Madrid's remarkable achievement of winning three consecutive Champions League titles. The Spanish manager, who led the French club to two straight European championships since his arrival in July 2023, is determined to extend their reign on football's biggest stage.
Aiming for History
Enrique, 56, wants PSG to equal the rare feat that Real Madrid accomplished by beating Liverpool in the 2018 final. Under his guidance, the team has also secured three Ligue 1 titles. Their current Champions League campaign kicked off impressively with a dominant 6-1 victory over Slovan Bratislava.
Fueling Ambition Through Continental Success
The recent domestic and European triumphs have not dimmed Enrique’s drive. As PSG prepares for challenging clashes against Manchester City and Enrique’s former club, Barcelona—where he won the Champions League in 2015—the coach expressed the squad’s motivation.
"We've won it twice in a row, but that's no reason to stop. We're built to play in the Champions League. We have an extra incentive: to try and achieve something only Real Madrid has managed so far. It's a special goal," Enrique said on the club’s official site.
He also commented on the competition: "Man City and Barcelona are teams that love winning the Champions League, who have already won it and are among the favourites. There are six, seven or eight teams capable of winning this Champions League. We're one of them, but it'll be tough and we're not the clear favourites."
Contract Extension Raises Stakes
Having guided PSG to 13 major trophies, Enrique recently signed a three-year extension, keeping him at the club until 2030. He emphasized the mindset he brought upon joining the team:
"Our main goal when we arrived was to make history. The club had won major trophies, but none more important than the Champions League. For me and the players, the constant desire to win is essential at the highest level."
Addressing expectations after his contract renewal, Enrique added, "I've extended my contract and now I'm under more pressure to prove I’m ready to continue and want to win many more trophies for PSG. The objective remains the same: to win and keep on winning."
Tough Tests Ahead
PSG face immediate challenges in the Champions League with a trip to Manchester City followed by hosting Barcelona in Paris on October 20. These back-to-back fixtures against top contenders will test their resolve as reigning champions.
