Luis Enrique Defends Manchester City Amid Financial Charges Before Champions League Clash
PSG Coach Luis Enrique Backs Manchester City After Financial Verdict
Paris Saint-Germain head coach Luis Enrique has publicly supported Manchester City following the club's recent guilty verdict over financial misconduct by a Premier League independent commission. Speaking ahead of their Champions League meeting, Enrique expressed hope that City would avoid heavy sanctions and emphasized their accomplishments on the pitch.
Financial Allegations Against Manchester City
Manchester City is involved in a high-profile legal dispute concerning breaches of Premier League rules. The club was found guilty of 114 violations between 2009 and 2018, mainly linked to alleged sham sponsorship deals that reportedly inflated their revenue by £900 million. City denies all accusations, asserting the sponsorships were legitimate and funded by the Abu Dhabi government, not the club's owners, the Abu Dhabi United Group.
The final decision on potential penalties is expected later this year.
Enrique Highlights City's Sporting Success
Before PSG’s showdown with City, Enrique praised the club’s on-field dominance despite off-field controversies. Though Enzo Maresca currently manages City, Enrique acknowledged the legacy left by Pep Guardiola, his former Barcelona teammate and Maresca's predecessor.
"There is a lot of noise around Manchester City and there is often noise around big clubs," Enrique said. "We just have to wait and see what the final decision will be. I hope everything works out well for Manchester City because I think what they have done on the pitch has been incredible over the last few years and they certainly deserved to win on the pitch all the trophies they have won."
He stressed that trophies earned on the field should stand apart from boardroom disputes. "The trophies you win on the pitch remain on the pitch. They deserved to win that and I hope they can avoid the sanction," he added.
Awaiting Final Ruling
Enrique refrained from delving into legal details, focusing instead on the upcoming judgment. He also noted his personal relationship with Pep Guardiola and promised private conversations on the matter.
"Now we have to wait to see what the authorities decide or the judge is going to say," Enrique explained. "The things I will say to Pep I will do in private."
Following the verdict, City won their first Premier League match against Liverpool 3-0 but faced hostile boos at Anfield, showing how the controversy affects the atmosphere.
European Clash Looms
City must now put domestic distractions behind them as they prepare to face Enrique's PSG in the Champions League. This highly anticipated encounter pits the English giants against the French champions.
For City, the focus remains on performing strongly in Europe to show commitment to winning trophies under Maresca's management.
