Manchester United Pursue Bradley Locko as Left-Back Search Intensifies
Manchester United’s late-window hunt for a left-back is narrowing, and a new name has stepped into the frame: Bradley Locko.
With the deadline fast approaching and the clock beginning to bite, United’s recruitment team is working through options to solve a problem that has lingered too long on the left side of defence. The profile is clear. They want reliability, experience, and value — not necessarily a headline-grabber.
Alejandro Balde was the glamour target. The Barcelona full-back fits the modern template: young, explosive, already tested at the highest level. But the numbers don’t fit. According to Fabrizio Romano, United held talks with Jorge Mendes about a potential deal for Balde, only to walk away when the projected transfer fee and salary package climbed beyond what INEOS are prepared to sanction.
United like the player. They don’t like the price.
That has pushed the club towards a different lane in the market, one they know well. Romano compared the current search to the move that brought Sergio Reguilon in on loan from Tottenham — a short-term, pragmatic solution rather than a statement signing. An “experienced left-back who can provide competition and who also has an international profile,” as he put it.
The pressure to act is real. Romano has made it clear that United are “still looking for a solution at left-back” and expects them to bring someone in before the window closes. The position is described internally as an area that needs to be improved now, not revisited in January.
That urgency is where Bradley Locko comes in.
The Brest defender, 24, has emerged as one of the names on United’s list in these final days of the summer window. Journalist Dylan McBennett reported on X that Locko would be open to joining United before the deadline, describing him as one of “numerous left-backs with desire to join United this summer.”
Willingness is not a minor detail at this stage of the market. Clubs want players who are ready to move, ready to adapt, ready to compete for a place immediately. Locko fits that mood.
Since joining Brest in 2023, the Frenchman has grown steadily in Ligue 1, earning a reputation as a dependable outlet on the flank. He is under contract until 2027, which gives Brest a strong negotiating position, but it also underlines the fact that this would not be a short-term rescue job for the player. Any move to Old Trafford would be a significant step up in profile and expectation.
Locko’s numbers are modest but telling: five assists in 67 appearances in all competitions for Brest. He is not a pure attacking specialist, but he offers balance, discipline and a left foot that can deliver. For a club that has often been forced into makeshift solutions at left-back, that alone carries value.
United’s strategy appears to be crystallising. The Balde-type deal — expensive, marquee, long-term — is being parked for now. The priority is to secure a “guarantee” at left-back, a player who can plug in quickly and raise the floor of the position without consuming a huge chunk of the budget.
Locko is not a superstar. He is not being sold as one. But he is available, open to the move, and fits the kind of profile United are actively exploring as the window ticks into its final stretch.
