Manchester United Under-21s Secure 3-2 Win Over Brentford U21s
Manchester United Under-21s clung onto their perfect Premier League 2 record with a frantic 3-2 win over Brentford U21s – a game that mixed control, controversy and a nervy finale.
This was how the young Reds measured up.
Cameron Byrne-Hughes – 7
Quiet for long spells, then vital when it mattered. Byrne-Hughes produced two big saves late in the second half, shutting the door just as Brentford threatened a smash-and-grab. Those interventions ultimately protected the three points.
Yuel Helafu – 8
Outstanding. Stationed at right-back in name only, Helafu roamed everywhere. His lung-bursting 70-yard surge down the left set up United’s opener and summed up his night: aggressive, fearless, relentless. With United dominating the ball, he regularly drifted inside, broke lines on the dribble and overloaded central areas. His ambitious long-range effort took a deflection for a deserved goal. The blot: a poor pass followed by a rash lunge while already on a yellow, which brought unnecessary jeopardy to an otherwise commanding display.
Albert Mills – 6
Switched off for Brentford’s first, losing his man at a key moment. Outside of that lapse, he looked relatively assured and handled most of what came his way without drama.
Dan Armer – 6
Silky on the ball, shaky in space. Armer stepped out confidently in possession and helped United build from the back, but Brentford’s counters exposed his lack of recovery pace. Balls slid into the channels caused him real problems.
Harry Amass – 7
Composed and brave under pressure. Amass’s calmness on the ball helped United beat the press before the first goal, and he repeatedly combined well with Bendito Mantato down the flank. Like Helafu, he often popped up in advanced areas as United squeezed Brentford back. He will, however, regret allowing the cross to come in too easily for Brentford’s opener.
Tyler Fletcher – 7.5
The heartbeat in midfield. Tyler Fletcher knitted everything together, constantly finding pockets and threading passes. His understanding with brother Jack was obvious, repeatedly sliding defence-splitting balls into the left side of the box. He had a hand in the build-up to all three United goals, always available, always progressive.
Jim Thwaites – 7
A metronome with range. Thwaites sprayed the ball from side to side, switching play whenever he could and stretching Brentford’s compact shape. He kept United ticking, though the incisive pass through the middle never quite arrived.
Victor Musa – 6.5
One chance, one finish. Musa’s goal was superbly taken, a crisp first-time strike that underlined his quality in the box. Outside that moment, he drifted in and out of the game and struggled to impose himself consistently from the right.
Jack Fletcher – 7.5
The creative spark. Jack Fletcher operated between the lines, slipping into tight spaces and prising open a stubborn Brentford defence with clever passing and sharp movement. His work without the ball was just as important, pressing aggressively and making it hard for the visitors to build. He fashioned a few half-chances for himself and walked away with a single assist, which scarcely reflected his influence.
Samuel Lusale – 6
Did the unseen work in the early stages. Lusale recycled possession neatly, helping United pin Brentford back and maintain territorial dominance. His night ended prematurely through injury, just as he was settling into the rhythm of the game.
Amir Ibragimov – 7
A constant nuisance up top. Ibragimov finished his goal with real precision, picking his spot perfectly. He battled willingly against two sizeable centre-backs, never shying away from the physical contest and giving United an outlet throughout.
Substitutes
Bendito Mantato – 6.5
Injected life into the front line. Mantato’s direct running and urgency sharpened an attack that had started to look laboured. He stretched Brentford’s back line and opened up space for others.
Tynan Thompson – 6
Struggled to stamp his authority. Thompson had limited involvement and, when he did receive the ball, often slowed United down by taking too many touches.
Christian Orozco – 6
Neat, tidy, and alert. Orozco kept things simple with quick, short passes and stayed switched on defensively, making a crucial clearing header from a late Brentford corner as United clung on.
The unbeaten run survives, the performance leaves room for argument, and the standard for this young United side continues to rise.
