Mexx Meerdink Shines with Two Goals in Netherlands' Nations League Win Over Serbia
Mexx Meerdink's Dream Debut Lights Up Belgrade
AZ striker Mexx Meerdink fulfilled a childhood ambition by scoring twice in the Netherlands’ 2-1 victory against Serbia during the UEFA Nations League clash at the Rajko Mitić Stadium. The 23-year-old forward seized his chance after Brian Brobbey had to withdraw through injury, making his first full international start under coach Xavi Hernández.
First-Half Penalty and Late Winner
Meerdink calmly converted a first-half penalty after Crysencio Summerville was fouled, giving the Dutch an early lead. Serbia’s Luka Jović equalised shortly after the break, but Meerdink sealed the win with a slick sliding finish in the 78th minute, assisted by Guus Til. This victory marked the Netherlands’ opening success of the Nations League campaign.
Reflecting on an Incredible Week
"It is a childhood dream," said Meerdink. "Everything has happened so quickly this week. I felt some pressure before the penalty, but to score twice and help the team win feels great."
The young striker expressed joy over his rapid rise from substitute against Germany to key player in Belgrade, highlighting how special it was to earn three points for the team.
Praise for Work Rate and Team Contribution
Beyond his goals, Meerdink earned strong commendation from coach Xavi for his relentless defensive effort and high pressing. Positioned as the main attacking outlet, he consistently disrupted Serbia’s build-up while effectively combining with teammates Joey Veerman and Guus Til. Xavi also confirmed Meerdink as the second-choice penalty taker behind Cody Gakpo, reflecting the staff’s trust in him.
Next Challenge: Greece
Looking ahead, Meerdink and the Netherlands focus on their upcoming Nations League match against group leaders Greece in Thessaloniki on October 1. The forward hopes to maintain his starting role and continue his scoring streak. The return fixture against Serbia will take place in Eindhoven on Sunday.
