Monza Prepares for ‘Weird’ Italian GP with 2026 F1 Cars

Monza is supposed to be the Temple of Speed. This weekend, it might feel more like the Temple of Frustration.

Drivers are already warning that the 2026-spec Formula 1 cars will deliver a “weird”, “confusing” and “not fantastic” experience around the Italian Grand Prix’s flat‑out classic. The issue isn’t downforce, tyres or grip.

It’s energy. Or rather, the lack of it.

The Temple of Speed… with Hungary-level top speeds

When teams first ran the 2026 regulations in the simulator, Monza immediately stood out as a problem child. The track that usually produces the highest speeds on the calendar suddenly exposed the limits of the new hybrid package.

Early sims painted a bizarre picture: cars rocketing out of corners, then bleeding speed halfway down the straights as battery deployment ran dry. Some models even had drivers changing down gears in the middle of the main straight just to keep the powertrain alive.

Regulation tweaks since then – reduced recharge limits, capped deployment – have reshaped that profile. The old nightmare of losing 30–40 km/h from a 350–360 km/h peak has been dialled back.

The new reality is stranger. The cars simply never get near those historic highs in the first place. They accelerate, then plateau.

As Racing Bulls rookie Arvid Lindblad put it: “There's just not much battery. We don't actually go slower on the straights. We just don't use any.”

McLaren’s Oscar Piastri has already seen the consequences on the simulator. Monza, the home of low drag and huge numbers on the speed trap, might actually be slower than one of F1’s tightest, twistiest venues.

“I think in our sim running we were actually quicker on the front straight in Hungary than we were here,” he said. “It doesn't make a whole lot of sense, but it's more that we just don't have the energy to spend.”

Drivers are no longer expecting that surreal mid‑straight downshift on the run to the first chicane, but the energy starvation hasn’t vanished. Sims suggest they could still be forced into seventh gear on the uphill approach to Ascari, simply because the power unit has nothing left to give.

At Monza, of all places, the limiter this year is not drag. It’s the battery.

No “super-clipping” circus – but the bill still arrives

One of the big fears heading into the weekend was an ugly one: super clipping everywhere.

In F1 jargon, that would mean brutal energy harvesting at the worst possible moments – cars lifting or stuttering through famous corners like the Lesmos or Ascari just to claw back battery charge, then crawling to the end of the straights 30 or 40 km/h slower.

The FIA’s 5MJ harvesting limit for this event has at least prevented that scenario from spiralling out of control. With such limited opportunities to recover energy, teams simply don’t have the headroom to go wild on harvesting.

Piastri summed it up: “If the harvest limit was higher, we would be super clipping everywhere, probably losing 30 or 40 km/h at the end of each straight, but with the [5MJ] harvest limit, the super clipping is a normalish amount, or a reasonable amount.”

So the spectacle of Lesmo 1, Lesmo 2 and Ascari being neutered by extreme lift‑and‑coast should be avoided. The trade-off is more subtle but no less fundamental: the cars are still energy‑starved. They just hit a ceiling earlier and sit there.

The lap may look tidy on TV. The data will tell a very different story.

No clever tricks this time

Across 2026, drivers and engineers have become increasingly inventive in how they manage these new power units. The fastest way around an energy‑limited lap has not always been the most aggressive.

Spa-Francorchamps exposed that logic in brutal fashion. Some drivers found that lifting through previously flat-out corners like Pouhon, or not using full power on corner exit, actually made them quicker over the full lap. Sacrifice now, gain later on the straight.

Lando Norris doesn’t see Monza offering that kind of tactical nuance.

“I think the difference to Spa was that you had two big straights but you had lots of corners in-between that you could charge up and then deploy everything,” he said.

“Unfortunately here you have two long straights back-to-back, but even between them there's not really any corners. So, there's just no energy, there's just no power. You don't have an ability to charge, so it's just slow.”

The layout strips away the creative options. There are no long, medium‑speed corners to lean on for harvesting, no complex sequences to play games with throttle application and lift points.

At Monza, you leave a chicane, you go full throttle, and you wait. The battery either lasts or it doesn’t. Being “smart” won’t suddenly unlock a magic mode.

Qualifying games: slow out-laps, painful cool-downs

If the race looks odd, qualifying could be downright awkward.

The key to a competitive lap will be simple on paper: start the lap with as much battery charge as possible while still getting the tyres into their working window. The execution will be anything but.

Out-laps are now capped at 9MJ of recharge. That number is designed to stop drivers crawling around at walking pace and to encourage them to actually push a bit while preparing the tyres.

Cool-down laps are a different story. Those are stuck at the standard 5MJ limit.

So anyone planning a push–cool–push sequence in qualifying will hit a wall. On that middle lap, drivers will likely have to back off heavily to avoid overcharging the battery too early and smashing into the 5MJ ceiling.

Lindblad expects that to be one of the least enjoyable parts of the weekend.

“I think the out-laps will be slow, but I don't think they'll be stupid,” he said. “I think what won't be enjoyable is going to be cooldown laps, because the rules are different between out-laps and cool laps. So, in cool laps you'll be going very slow to try to charge the battery.”

Around a circuit where slipstream games and track position already turn qualifying into a chess match at 330 km/h, sprinkling in ultra-slow recharge laps risks chaos. The accordion effect into the final corner could be dramatic.

Auto-K, Parabolica, and a dangerous speed delta

Even the start of a lap is now a strategic minefield.

Teams and drivers must decide how much battery to burn exiting Parabolica. Use too much chasing a top-speed boost before the line, and the car could be left short on the run to the final corner later in the lap. Misjudge it, and a promising effort dies halfway down a straight.

Earlier in the year, drivers manually tried to time their acceleration and deployment before the timing line, searching for the sweet spot. That created unpredictability – different cars doing different things in the same bit of track.

In May, for Miami, F1 moved to automate that process. The so‑called ‘auto-K’ system lets teams pre-programme when the battery deploys. The driver exits Parabolica flat on the throttle, but the power unit only unleashes full electrical deployment in a pre‑defined zone.

On paper, that makes life easier. In practice, it might turn Parabolica’s exit into one of the most dangerous points of the weekend.

Lindblad has already seen the warning signs.

“We saw it a bit in Zandvoort, but it was okay because of the banking,” he said. “There was a 50-60 km/h speed delta, so you could get out of the way and let the guys through.

“Here it's even more - and it could become a bit dangerous. So, starting the lap won't be easy, to have it full, have the tyres ready.

“But even just from traffic, from safety, it's not great. We need a better battery.”

Cars on hot laps, fully deployed and committed, could be bearing down on rivals who are crawling, building charge, waiting for their pre‑set deployment point to kick in. The difference in speed will be huge, and Monza’s narrow racing line offers little margin for error.

Monza has built its legend on noise, speed and slipstream battles that stretch from the first chicane to Parabolica. This year, the story might be written in kilojoules and software maps.

If this is the most extreme test yet of F1’s 2026 power units, the real question lingers over the weekend: is this just a one-off quirk of Monza, or a warning siren for where the sport’s “future” is heading?
