Nathan Collins Injury Leaves Ireland Concerned for Nations League Start
Republic of Ireland captain Nathan Collins is facing a race against time to be fit for the start of the Nations League after suffering a calf injury with Brentford.
The centre-back limped out of Brentford's 1-1 draw with Sunderland in the Premier League last weekend and will now miss club action up to the international break, according to Bees manager Keith Andrews.
Andrews, speaking before Brentford’s game against Bournemouth, confirmed the scale of the setback.
“No, he won't be involved this side of the international break. Unfortunately, he's picked up a calf injury,” he said, adding that Collins had tried to grit his way through the problem.
“He probably felt it a little bit earlier in the game and tried to play through it, naturally, like he would, given the type of character he is and being one of our leaders and our captains. So, no, unfortunately he won't be involved.”
For Ireland, the timing is grim.
Collins, already a central figure with 40 international caps, is at the heart of Heimir Hallgrimsson’s plans as the Republic prepare to open their Nations League Group B3 campaign.
Hallgrimsson’s side begin away to Kosovo on Thursday, 24 September, then travel to face Israel three days later. The schedule is unforgiving: Austria visit the Aviva Stadium on Thursday, 1 October, before Ireland meet Israel again at a neutral venue on Sunday, 4 October to close an extended international window.
A gruelling run. And potentially without their captain.
If Collins fails to recover in time, Hallgrimsson will be forced into a defensive reshuffle just as the competition starts to bite. For a team looking to build momentum and identity under a relatively new regime, losing a leader in the spine of the side is more than an inconvenience; it changes the feel of the dressing room and the tone of the campaign.
Ireland now wait on medical bulletins and recovery updates, knowing that how quickly their captain’s calf heals could shape the opening chapter of their Nations League story.
