Nathaniel Mendez-Laing Denies Assault Allegation in Court

Nathaniel Mendez-Laing, the former Premier League winger now with MK Dons, has appeared in court to deny an allegation that he assaulted his wife at the couple’s home in Staffordshire.

The 34-year-old is accused of attacking his wife, Saira Mendez-Laing, during an incident in June at their luxury property in Shenstone. Police were called to the address and Mendez-Laing was later arrested and charged with assault by beating.

At Cannock magistrates’ court on Friday, the Birmingham-born forward faced a single count of assault by beating. He arrived on crutches and spoke only to confirm his name, age and address before entering a not guilty plea.

The court heard that Saira, the mother of Mendez-Laing’s child, was allegedly struck repeatedly over the head and suffered an arm injury during the incident. The confrontation is said to have started after a disagreement over a phone. Mendez-Laing denies that any physical assault took place.

Prosecutors confirmed that the Crown Prosecution Service authorised the charge last month.

District Judge Joseph O’Connor granted the player conditional bail and listed the case for trial in January next year, when the full details of the allegation and Mendez-Laing’s defence will be tested in court.

Mendez-Laing, a former England under-17 international, built his reputation with Cardiff City, scoring four goals in 20 Premier League appearances in the 2019/20 season before leaving the club in September 2020. He has since switched international allegiance and represents Guatemala, qualifying through his mother and maternal grandmother, who were both born in the Central American nation.

Off the pitch, the winger married Saira in June last year. MK Dons marked the occasion at the time by posting a wedding photograph and a congratulatory message on the club’s official social media channels.

MK Dons, currently 19th in League One, have declined to comment while legal proceedings continue. The next word in this case will come not from the club, but from the courtroom when Mendez-Laing stands trial in the new year.
