Patrick McEnroe Shares Views on Arthur Fils' Chances for Grand Slam Victory

Arthur Fils: France's Hope for a Grand Slam Title

Arthur Fils stands as the frontrunner to become France’s next Grand Slam singles champion. The last French player to win a major was Marion Bartoli at Wimbledon in 2013, while the last Frenchman to claim a Grand Slam singles title was Yannick Noah, who won Roland Garros 43 years ago.

Currently ranked world number seven, Fils has had a breakthrough season. He earned his spot at this year's ATP Finals and captured his first Masters 1000 crown at the Cincinnati Open.

Patrick McEnroe on Fils’ Potential

Grand Slam doubles winner Patrick McEnroe spoke with Tennis Actu TV about Fils’ chances of winning a major. He highlighted that Fils has faced several physical challenges recently, including a stress fracture in his lower back that kept him off the tour for months. McEnroe emphasized the importance of staying fit.

"I like him a lot, he is an excellent player," McEnroe said. "I hope he can play all the time because he has been injured for a long time, but if he can play during the season I believe he can win a Grand Slam."

McEnroe also reflected on the significance of qualifying for the ATP Finals, noting that Fils is the first Frenchman to reach it since Gael Monfils did in 2026. When asked if the year-end event is harder to win than a Grand Slam, he replied:

"It’s only the eight players, the top eight players from the world. It’s very special for the players and the elite of everyone. I think both are very difficult, but maybe the Grand Slams [are bigger] because there’s a lot of pressure and a lot of weeks, but it’s very difficult to win the Tour Finals too."

Fils’ Best Grand Slam Performances

Although Fils broke into the top 10 after victories in Cincinnati and Barcelona, Grand Slams have proven more challenging. He has yet to reach a quarter-final at a major tournament.

  • Australian Open: 3-2 win-loss record; best result - Third Round (2025); did not play in 2026
  • Roland Garros: 3-2 win-loss record; best result - Third Round (2025); did not play in 2026
  • Wimbledon: 4-3 win-loss record; best result - Fourth Round (2024); reached Second Round in 2026
  • US Open: 2-3 win-loss record; best result - Second Round (2023 & 2024); lost in First Round in 2026

Wimbledon marks his deepest run so far, reaching the fourth round in 2024. The 2026 Grand Slam season was tough for him, winning only one match at Wimbledon and missing the Australian Open and Roland Garros due to injury.

Looking Ahead

Fils won his opening match at the Paris Masters against Tomas Machac and will face Taylor Fritz next. Their rivalry is tied at one win each. Fritz aims to secure a spot at the ATP Finals alongside Fils. The young Frenchman will focus on his home tournament before concluding his season at the ATP Finals.
