Pedro Porro Returns as Tottenham Faces Chelsea in London Derby
Pedro Porro is back, and just in time for one of the fixtures that still makes London bristle.
Tottenham head across the capital to Stamford Bridge on Saturday, Oct. 24, with their vice-captain fit again and ready to step straight into a side that has finally remembered how to win a league game.
Porro returns for a different-looking Spurs
Porro has been missing for a month with a hamstring injury suffered in the chaotic 3-2 defeat to Aston Villa on Sept. 19, limited to just four appearances before pulling up. Tottenham have badly missed his drive on the right, his delivery, his aggression.
He is available again, and Roberto De Zerbi is not easing him in.
Porro is expected to reclaim his spot at right wing-back, with Archie Gray the likely casualty. On the opposite flank, Andy Robertson has been cleared to continue after shaking off a knock picked up in the 3-1 win over Coventry City on Monday, a result that finally dragged Spurs out of the bottom three and gave their season a pulse.
De Zerbi’s update on Friday was as upbeat as any Tottenham fan has heard in weeks. “Pedro is back, Robertson is available, Marmoush is good, Solanke is good,” the Spurs boss said, ticking off key names as if he knew exactly how much anxiety has surrounded his squad list.
Depleted, but with a clear plan
The optimism comes with caveats. Tottenham travel to Chelsea still shorthanded in key areas.
Lucas Bergvall, Sávio, Destiny Udogie, Xavi Simons and Wilson Odobert all remain out. Rodrigo Bentancur serves the second match of his suspension after his red card against Manchester United, removing a major presence from the middle of the pitch. Mudryk is also listed among the absentees for this one.
So De Zerbi leans on structure, not sentiment.
Tottenham’s projected XI at Stamford Bridge has a bold, attacking shape:
- Goalkeeper: Kinsky
- Defense: Porro, Adarabioyo, Van Hecke, Van de Ven, Robertson
- Midfield: Tonali, Maddison
- Forwards: Kudus, Solanke, Marmoush
It is a side built to play on the front foot, even in one of the most unforgiving away grounds in the league. Porro and Robertson will be asked to stretch the pitch, Tonali and Maddison to dictate it, and a front three of Kudus, Solanke and Marmoush to turn territory into something more tangible.
The message is clear: Spurs are not going to Stamford Bridge just to survive.
A derby with something to prove
The context is stark. Tottenham have only just claimed their first Premier League win of the season, that 3-1 victory over Coventry easing the immediate pressure but not erasing the questions. One result does not rewrite a table, or a mood. A London derby away at Chelsea, though, can shift an entire narrative.
Kickoff is set for 12:30 p.m. ET at Stamford Bridge, with coverage on Peacock, NBCSN and Telemundo.
For De Zerbi, this is an early test of conviction. For Porro, it is a return staged under the harshest possible lights. For Tottenham, it is something simpler: a chance to show that climbing out of the bottom three was a beginning, not a brief escape.
