Players Who Defeated Rafael Nadal at the Shanghai Masters as He Fell Short of the Title

Rafael Nadal's Struggle to Win the Shanghai Masters

Rafael Nadal never captured the Shanghai Masters title during his career. Despite retiring in 2024, he remains one of tennis’s all-time greats, with 22 Grand Slam wins and 36 Masters 1000 titles, second only to Novak Djokovic.

Nadal secured victories in seven out of the nine current ATP Masters 1000 events but Shanghai was one of only two where he never claimed the trophy.

Eight Appearances Without a Title

Nadal’s closest shot came in the inaugural Shanghai Masters final in 2009, where he lost to Nikolay Davydenko with scores of 7-6(3), 6-3.

After that runner-up finish, early defeats followed in 2010 and 2011 against Jurgen Melzer and Florian Mayer, respectively. A left knee injury kept him out of the 2012 tournament.

Returning in 2013, Nadal reached the semi-finals but was stopped by Juan Martin del Potro. In 2014, he exited early again after a loss to compatriot Feliciano Lopez.

In 2015, Nadal made it to the semis but was beaten by Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. The following year, he lost in the second round to Viktor Troicki.

His final appearance came in 2017 when he reached the final but was defeated by longtime rival Roger Federer 6-4, 6-3. This made Nadal the only player to lose multiple finals at Shanghai without ever winning the title.

Nadal on Missing the Shanghai Title

"No, no, I just play every tournament with as high motivation as possible," Nadal said after the 2017 final. "Would not be fair I play here with higher motivation than in Monte-Carlo because I didn’t win here and I won in Monte-Carlo 10 times. Every time I go on court I try my best. I try to play as good as I can. Sometimes I play better; sometimes I play worse. That’s all. Shanghai is an important event. I always put attention in this event. It’s true that I was not able to play as good as I would like here that often, but I already played two finals, couple of semi-finals. So it was not a bad event."

Nadal missed the Shanghai Masters in 2018 due to a right knee injury and skipped 2019 because of a left wrist problem. The tournament itself was off the calendar until 2023, when Nadal was near retirement and competing less frequently.
