Ronald Araujo Shines at Anfield for Liverpool

Ronald Araujo is playing for Liverpool, but he still belongs to Barcelona. That tension hangs over every one of his performances in red this season.

The Uruguayan defender has made a sharp start to life at Anfield, even while being asked to do a job that is not quite his natural one. Andoni Iraola has pushed him wide, using him on the flank for extra defensive steel, trusting his reading of the game and physicality to lock down a problem area.

Liverpool knew exactly what they were doing when they handed over a precious foreign-player slot to bring him in. Barcelona sporting director Deco made that very clear.

“I watched the Liverpool match yesterday,” he told Sport. “I love him. I'm fond of him and want him to succeed. Personally, I love him. At times, he hasn't been able to play at his usual level.

“His time at Barca was spectacular. Sometimes, ideas don't align. He is under contract with us; it's still early days.”

Those last four words carry weight: it's still early days.

Barcelona know exactly what Araujo can be. They have already seen his peak in their colours, anchoring their back line with aggression and authority. They have also seen the dip. Over the past couple of seasons, his level dropped, the fit less natural, the ideas – as Deco put it – no longer perfectly aligned.

Liverpool believe they can restore him. Quickly. They see a defender who can lock down the right side, step inside as a centre-back, and give them the kind of tactical flexibility that shapes seasons. If they are right and Araujo climbs back to his best, two clubs benefit: Liverpool gain a top-level defender in his prime, Barcelona gain a €50m fee.

That is why every appearance matters. Every clean sheet, every duel won, every moment when that flank looks secure will feed into one of the most intriguing decisions of Liverpool’s summer.

For now, the story is still being written. Araujo is playing with purpose, Liverpool are getting what they hoped for, and Barcelona are watching, calculating, waiting.
