Scott McTominay Transfer Speculation: Premier League Return or Reunion with Jose Mourinho at Real Madrid?
Scott McTominay's Future in Question Amid Napoli Contract Talks
Scott McTominay has yet to finalize a new contract with Napoli, stirring talk about his next career move. Former Scotland international Pat Nevin shared his thoughts with GOAL on where the midfielder might head, suggesting possibilities including a reunion with Jose Mourinho at Real Madrid or a return to the Premier League.
From Manchester United to Napoli for £26 Million
In the summer of 2024, McTominay left Manchester United after spending his entire professional career there. He moved to Napoli for a £26 million ($35 million) fee, seeking a new role after struggling to secure a specific position at Old Trafford, often used as a holding midfielder.
The decision by United to sell McTominay sparked questions, especially given their ongoing issues with consistency. Critics argued the club underestimated his value and overlooked his capabilities as a box-to-box player.
Success in Italy: Serie A Title and Individual Honors
Since joining Napoli, McTominay has flourished with more freedom to attack. His first season culminated in a Serie A title and MVP award, while he ranked 18th in the 2025 Ballon d’Or voting.
He improved his personal goal tally from 13 to 14 in a single season and has become a fan favorite alongside his partner, Cam Reading, known affectionately as the Queen of Italy. After addressing some recent health challenges, McTominay is now fit and competing strongly in the 2026-27 season, following his participation in the World Cup.
With just over 18 months left on his current deal at Stadio Diego Armando Maradona, Napoli faces a decision: either cash in on him or risk losing him later. Interest has been noted from Barcelona before, and rumors now suggest that Real Madrid is closely monitoring the situation, potentially reuniting McTominay with Mourinho, who gave him his break at Manchester United.
Will McTominay Return to England or Move to Spain?
Speculation also points to a possible return to English football. When asked about McTominay's future, Pat Nevin responded to GOAL:
“That’s a brilliant question. It’s tough because so many teams would want him. I still don’t understand why Manchester United let him go—they never truly recognized his potential until Scotland helped unlock it.I wouldn’t be surprised if he stayed in Napoli; Italian clubs admire what he’s done there. Could he make an even bigger jump? Honestly, almost any club would welcome him because he can play multiple roles—number 10, 6, 8, even centre-back. Essentially, he’s like having four quality players in one. So where will he play? Anywhere he wants!”
McTominay's Next Step: Spain, England, or Staying Put?
McTominay remains tight-lipped about his plans, focusing on the present after recovering from a minor procedure to fix irregular heartbeats. At 29, he probably has only one major transfer ahead of him. He must decide whether to explore new horizons, possibly in Spain, settle down, or complete the circle of his career path.
