Tottenham Hijack Mudryk Deal on Deadline Day

Mykhailo Mudryk is heading for a medical at Tottenham, and with it Leeds United’s ambitious move for the Chelsea winger has been ripped out of their grasp on deadline day.

For much of the window, Leeds had a wide forward near the top of Daniel Farke’s wish list. Mudryk’s name sat prominently among the options, with multiple reports placing the Elland Road club firmly in the race. They pushed. They waited. Then Spurs pounced.

The north London club have moved decisively, jumping ahead of Leeds to secure a paid loan for the 25-year-old, with a buy option understood to be set at around £75 million. It is not an obligation, but it is a statement. Tottenham, already spending heavily this summer, have chosen to gamble on a winger whose career has been on pause for almost a year.

Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano summed up the breakthrough on X, confirming that Tottenham and Mudryk had reached full agreement on the move, including personal terms, and that the deal includes a non-mandatory buy option. The Ukrainian, he added, will be reunited with Roberto De Zerbi, under whom he previously flourished.

Spurs’ recruitment drive under De Zerbi has been relentless. The club have already assembled a strikingly expensive and eclectic cast: Andy Robertson and Marcos Senesi arriving on frees from Liverpool and Bournemouth respectively, Jan Paul van Hecke for £52m from Brighton, Martin Dubravka on a free from Burnley, Mateus Fernandes for £85m from West Ham, Sandro Tonali for £92.5m from Newcastle United, Savinho for £75m from Manchester City and Omar Marmoush on loan from City as well.

Now comes Mudryk, with Tosin Adarabioyo also set for a medical as he prepares to swap Chelsea blue for Spurs white. Two signings from a London rival, two more pieces in an already lavish rebuild.

Mudryk’s story brings its own edge. In 2024 he received a four-year suspension after a failed drug test showed a low concentration of the banned substance meldonium. He has not played since November of that year. His case went to appeal, the ban was resolved, and he was cleared to return to football at the end of last month. Tottenham are betting that the explosive winger who once lit up European nights can be recovered from that hiatus.

For Leeds, the fallout is immediate. Missing out on Mudryk may strengthen the hand of those already in the building. Two Welsh wingers, Daniel James and Harry Wilson, suddenly find their paths a little clearer.

Wilson, snapped up on a free from Fulham earlier in the summer, is trying to nail down a starting role and reassert his Premier League pedigree. James, by contrast, is fighting his way back from a bruising 18 months marked by injuries and stop-start form. Both know this: Farke still wants another attacker, and that desire puts them under pressure as much as it offers opportunity.

Leeds finished 14th last season. That is the mark they are desperate to leave behind. Farke has been open in his intent to sharpen the side’s cutting edge in the final third, and the club’s late-window manoeuvres reflect that urgency.

Complicating matters is Wilfried Gnonto’s situation. The Italian is poised for an Elland Road exit, with Fiorentina circling, but Leeds will only sign off on that transfer once a replacement is through the door. No new attacker, no Gnonto departure. The clock is ticking.

All of this plays out against the hard stop of an 11pm deadline. Tottenham have made their move and look set to unveil Mudryk as part of a glittering, expensive new era. Leeds, left to regroup, must now find their own answer out wide before the window slams shut — or risk stepping into another season still one weapon short.
