UEFA Redraws European Football's Future: Major Finals and Nations League Changes
UEFA has redrawn European football’s calendar in one sweep, locking in hosts for the continent’s biggest club finals through 2029 and signing off on a significant revamp of the Nations League.
The decisions dropped in Thessaloniki, where UEFA’s Executive Committee met on Thursday and quietly shaped the next era of showpiece nights.
Champions League returns to old giants
At the top of the pile, as always, sits the men’s UEFA Champions League final.
In 2028, the competition’s crown jewel returns to the Munich Arena. Bayern Munich’s home, the stage for the unforgettable 2012 final, will once again host Europe’s biggest night, this time in its modern guise and with a new generation chasing history on the same turf.
One year later, in 2029, the spotlight swings to Spain and a rebuilt colossus. The new Spotify Camp Nou in Barcelona will host the final, its first European showpiece since 1999 and the first since the stadium’s transformation into the largest arena in Europe. A new Camp Nou, an old obsession: lifting the biggest trophy in club football on Catalan soil.
Europa League and Conference League carve out their stages
UEFA also locked in the destinations for its other men’s club competitions.
The Europa League will head east in 2028, with Bucharest’s National Arena chosen to host the final. In 2029, the baton passes to Belgrade, where the Serbia National Stadium will take its turn as the centre of European football for one night.
The UEFA Europa Conference League will visit two grounds steeped in recent European drama. In 2028, the final will be played at Juventus Stadium in Turin, a venue that has already seen its share of high-stakes nights. In 2029, the competition moves to the Puskas Arena in Budapest, a modern bowl that has quickly become a regular stop on UEFA’s big-event circuit.
Women’s Champions League and Super Cup on the move
The women’s game and UEFA’s curtain-raising Super Cup also received fresh direction.
The UEFA Women’s Champions League final will land at Parc Olympique Lyonnais in Lyon Decines in 2028, a fitting choice given Lyon’s deep connection with the women’s game and its serial winners. In 2029, the showpiece travels to the Wales National Stadium in Cardiff, taking the pinnacle of the women’s club game to a capital that has already hosted major European nights.
The UEFA Super Cup, the traditional season opener between the Champions League and Europa League winners, will head to the Johan Cruyff Arena in Amsterdam in 2027. A year later, in 2028, it breaks new ground in Astana, with the Astana Arena in Kazakhstan selected as host in a clear push to stretch the competition’s footprint deeper into new markets.
UEFA also confirmed that the 2027 UEFA Futsal Champions League final will be staged at the Biel/Bienne Arena in Switzerland, underlining its intent to keep futsal’s flagship event on a prominent, rotating stage.
Nations League faces a structural jolt
The biggest structural change, though, arrived with the Nations League.
UEFA’s Executive Committee signed off on a new promotion and relegation system for the 2026/27 edition. The adjustment is not cosmetic. It is designed to act as a bridge toward a more streamlined format that will come into force from the 2028/29 season.
From that point, the Nations League will shrink from four groups to three, tightening the field and raising the stakes across every matchday. Fewer groups, fewer soft landings, more games with something real on the line. The new promotion and relegation framework in 2026/27 is there to smooth that transition, so the competition can shift shape without chaos.

UEFA closed the Thessaloniki meeting with one final piece of business: the next date in the diary.
The Executive Committee will reconvene in Belfast, Northern Ireland, on 7 December, the day after the Euro 2028 qualifying draw is held in the same city.
By then, the venues will be set, the roadmap drawn. The only question left will be who finds a way to own these stages when the lights go up.
