Alexander Zverev Set to End 35-Year German Drought After Carlos Alcaraz's Unexpected Shanghai Exit
Alcaraz Faces Early Exit at Shanghai Masters
Carlos Alcaraz was stunned in the third round of the Shanghai Masters by Zizou Bergs, who claimed the biggest win of his career on Monday. Bergs defeated Alcaraz in straight sets, 7-5, 7-6. Although Alcaraz appeared ready to mount a comeback after breaking Bergs when down 6-5 in the second set, Bergs kept his composure to take the tiebreak and move forward.
Coming off his recent 27th ATP title win at the Japan Open, Alcaraz suffered his fifth loss this season with this defeat.
Alexander Zverev Confirmed as Year-End World Number One
Missing last year's Shanghai Masters means Alcaraz gained points by reaching the third round but can no longer claim the year-end number one spot for 2026. This honor is now officially guaranteed to Alexander Zverev.
With current world number one Jannik Sinner sidelined due to a knee injury, Zverev will finish the year at the top of the rankings after an outstanding season. The 29-year-old won his first two Grand Slam titles this year, triumphing at both Roland Garros and the US Open.
He also reached his best Wimbledon result yet, advancing to the final before losing to Sinner. Beyond the Slams, Zverev made it to the Madrid Open final, semifinals in Indian Wells, Miami, and Monte-Carlo, and led Team Europe to victory at the Laver Cup.
Historic Milestone for German Tennis
Zverev will be the first German man to hold the ATP world number one ranking since Boris Becker in 1991, ending a 35-year gap. Across all professional tennis, he becomes the first German singles player ranked number one since Angelique Kerber in 2017.
His rise also breaks the hold that Sinner and Alcaraz have had on the top spot, making him the first new world number one outside of this duo since Novak Djokovic took the lead in June 2024.
Zverev’s Reaction to Securing Year-End Top Spot
"It has been a fantastic season for me winning in Paris and New York," Zverev said via the ATP Tour Instagram page. "Knowing I will finish the year on top of the rankings is just a dream come true. So much work and effort have gone into achieving this, especially after recovering from my ankle injury."He was referring to the 2022 Roland Garros semifinal, where he tore all three lateral ligaments in his right ankle against Rafael Nadal."I look forward to finishing the season strong," Zverev added. He is currently playing in the Shanghai Masters, having advanced to the fourth round, and plans to compete at the Paris Masters and the year-end ATP Finals in Turin.
Alcaraz's Struggles Post-Grand Slam Season
Alcaraz’s loss fits a pattern seen over the past six years. The 23-year-old has found the ATP Masters 1000 events following the Grand Slam season—Shanghai and Paris—challenging.
He has rarely progressed beyond the quarterfinals in either tournament, managing only one quarterfinal finish combined between them. His performance in Paris is especially weak, having lost his opening match twice in the past three years.
