Alexander Zverev Secures Year-End No. 1 Spot Among ATP Legends
Alexander Zverev is having the best season of his career in 2026. After falling short in three straight Grand Slam finals earlier on, he finally broke through by winning his first major title at the French Open. Though he lost the Wimbledon final soon after, he bounced back impressively to capture the US Open crown.
This success has propelled Zverev to become the year-end ATP number one, making him the 30th player ever to hold this position and the 20th to finish the year atop the rankings.
Chasing Records: Year-End No. 1 Leaders
The German star, now 29, aims to hold onto this ranking as long as possible. Still, he faces a long road to match the multiple year-end No. 1 finishes held by tennis legends. Novak Djokovic leads with eight year-end No. 1 titles. He is followed by Pete Sampras with six. Roger Federer, Jimmy Connors, and Rafael Nadal each ended their careers with five year-end top rankings.
The list continues with Ivan Lendl and John McEnroe holding four apiece. Then come Bjorn Borg, Lleyton Hewitt, Stefan Edberg, and Zverev's current rival Carlos Alcaraz, all with two year-end No. 1 finishes.
Year-End No. 1 Titles by Player
- Novak Djokovic: 8
- Pete Sampras: 6
- Roger Federer: 5
- Jimmy Connors: 5
- Rafael Nadal: 5
- Ivan Lendl: 4
- John McEnroe: 4
- Bjorn Borg: 2
- Lleyton Hewitt: 2
- Stefan Edberg: 2
- Carlos Alcaraz: 2
Joining this exclusive group is a point of pride for Zverev. Although he has only secured the year-end No. 1 once so far, he matches others like Jannik Sinner, Jim Courier, Andy Roddick, Andre Agassi, and Andy Murray, who have also finished the year in that spot just once.
Current Form and Upcoming Challenges
Zverev is currently taking a break from the ATP tour after a recent semifinal loss to Alejandro Davidovich Fokina at the Shanghai Masters. The Spaniard went on to win the tournament by beating Rafael Jodar in the final.
Interestingly, Davidovich Fokina has claimed more Masters 1000 titles than Zverev in 2026. Zverev’s biggest victories came at the French Open and US Open, but he looks set to even the count at the Paris Masters. This event will serve as key preparation before the ATP Finals in Turin.
