Arsenal Miss Out on Malick Fofana as Sunderland Seals Deadline Day Deal

Arsenal’s search for a winger has taken a late and painful hit, with Malick Fofana slipping through their fingers on Deadline Day and heading not to north London, but to Sunderland.

Mikel Arteta’s side had moved for the Lyon wide man at the start of the week, identifying the 21-year-old as a key option to bolster an attack that has been stripped of depth on the left. Talks were opened with Lyon on Monday and Fofana, by all accounts, was open to the move. Fabrizio Romano reported that the winger even held conversations with Arteta as Arsenal explored a deal.

Then came the stumbling block: the fee.

Lyon wanted around €40 million. According to reports from Santi Aouna and David Ornstein, Arsenal refused to go that high. They held their line, and while they did, a Premier League rival pounced.

Sunderland stepped in with intent. The club quickly struck an agreement with Lyon for a €30 million deal, plus add-ons that could drag the final package towards Lyon’s original valuation. Where Arsenal hesitated, Sunderland accelerated, and the Ligue 1 side accepted.

Just like that, a player who had seemed destined for north London is instead bound for the north east.

For Arsenal, the timing is brutal. Leandro Trossard and Gabriel Martinelli have both departed this summer, leaving the squad thin on the left flank. The club had been working to reshape their forward options, but the exits have outpaced the arrivals.

Ethan Nwaneri is also set to undergo a medical at Borussia Dortmund ahead of a loan move, another attacking talent temporarily off the books. Christos Tzolis has come in from Club Brugge earlier in the window, yet that single addition now looks insufficient for a side with title ambitions and a heavy schedule.

Fofana had already turned down one Premier League opportunity this summer. Crystal Palace were close to an agreement with Lyon earlier in the window, only for the player to reject a move to Selhurst Park. Arsenal, aware of his preference for a bigger stage, moved late but believed they were in the race.

They were – until they weren’t.

Fofana will now fly to the north east for his medical, sealing one of the more surprising moves of the window. For Sunderland, it is a statement signing. For Arsenal, it is a reminder of how unforgiving Deadline Day can be when valuation and urgency collide.
