Michael Carrick vs Eddie Howe: Who Should Lead Manchester United?
Who Fits Best at Manchester United? Carrick or Howe?
With rumors swirling around Old Trafford about a potential managerial change, Michael Carrick faces pressure as Eddie Howe is linked to taking over the helm at Manchester United. Paul Parker, a former Premier League champion with the club, shared his thoughts on the situation with GOAL, highlighting the tough choices ahead.
Carrick’s Early Impact as Interim Manager
When Manchester United parted ways with Ruben Amorim in January, they turned to a familiar figure. Carrick, a celebrated player who tasted success with the Red Devils, stepped in after caretaker Darren Fletcher. He started strongly with a derby win over Manchester City and a victory against Arsenal away.
Contract Signed but Results Worrying
Despite securing third place last season, Carrick’s squad lacked significant reinforcements during the summer transfer window. This shortfall shows in their record: only two wins from nine matches across all competitions so far, and a current five-game winless streak. The board appears ready to act, with Howe, recently departed from Newcastle, emerging as a possible replacement.
Parker’s Take: Stick with Carrick
When asked whether United should keep Carrick or bring in Howe, Parker said he favors continuity. He doubts Howe would find the environment at United appealing given the restrictions on spending and control over staff. Parker pointed out that Howe experienced difficulties at his previous clubs, and stepping into a similar situation might not be attractive.
“I don’t see a really good fit for Manchester United right now because everything depends on what’s happening at the top, which isn’t great,” Parker explained. “If you’re ambitious and want to win a league with United, you know it can’t happen currently because of the state of things.”
Parker added that United struggles with moving players on, creating a logjam in the squad. He suggested Howe’s next role must be carefully chosen and come with support and ambition—elements he doesn’t think United currently offers.
United’s Struggles Continue
The club has not won the Premier League since Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013. Their challenges extend beyond the pitch, reflected in an early exit from the Carabao Cup and just six points from six league matches, placing them 13th in the standings. A recent 2-0 loss to Atletico Madrid in the Champions League included disciplinary issues and public frustration among players. Carrick’s position remains uncertain as they prepare for a crucial trip to Leeds.
