Lionel Scaloni Names Cristian Romero as Argentina's Next Captain After Messi
Argentina Prepares for Life After Lionel Messi
After more than twenty years wearing the Argentine jersey, Lionel Messi is nearing the end of his international career. His time leading La Albiceleste was marked not only by dazzling skill but also by his ability to inspire those around him. Messi’s presence often pulled defenders away, giving his teammates room to shine.
With Messi having captained Argentina for 15 years, questions arise about who will take up the mantle once he steps down. The leadership void left behind is significant, but head coach Lionel Scaloni has already signaled the future direction.
Cristian Romero Named Successor
Scaloni did not hesitate to reveal who will wear the captain’s armband next. According to Italian journalist Gianluca DiMarzio, Cristian Romero, the 28-year-old center back, will lead Argentina after Messi retires.
Romero’s selection makes sense given his experience and role within the squad. The Atletico Madrid defender started in six of Argentina’s seven matches during their victorious 2022 World Cup campaign in Qatar. With over 60 caps for the national team, he stands among the senior players. Despite a difficult final season at Tottenham, Romero remains one of Europe’s top defenders.
His leadership qualities have been recognized on big stages—he was included in the Copa America Best XI in both 2021 and 2024. Romero’s strong domestic form carries over when playing for Argentina, suggesting he could fill Messi’s sizable shoes as captain.
He already showed promise in this role during a September 30 match against Bolivia, scoring a header while wearing the captain's armband in front of fans in his hometown, Cordoba.
"A day that will always be etched in my memory," Romero told Goal. "I never imagined starting my career at Belgrano and 10 years later returning having achieved everything with the National Team. Scaloni told me quite some time ago that I was going to be the third captain. It's up to me to assume that responsibility."
Supporting Leaders in the Squad
Alongside Romero, veteran goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez serves as vice-captain, while striker Lautaro Martinez holds a deputy leadership role. Together, they form the core of Argentina’s leadership group moving forward.
