Why Cristiano Ronaldo Is Missing Portugal's Match Against Norway
Portugal's New Coach Starts Strong but Faces Challenges
Jorge Jesus has kicked off his tenure as Portugal’s manager with three straight wins. His first game was a narrow victory over Wales, followed by successful away matches against Norway and Denmark. Currently, Portugal leads its UEFA Nations League group with full points.
Despite the promising start, Jesus’s time in charge hasn’t been smooth. The biggest controversy surrounds the absence of Cristiano Ronaldo, who will not feature in Portugal’s upcoming game against Norway.
Reasons Behind Ronaldo’s Absence
Ronaldo, known for his fiery temperament, reacted strongly after being sidelined by Jesus during the previous match against Norway. After a poor performance versus Wales where he was subbed early, Ronaldo found himself on the bench in Oslo. Although Jesus had promised some playing time, Ronaldo remained unused during the 2–1 win.
With Portugal protecting a slim lead, Jesus chose not to bring Ronaldo on late in the game. He made it clear afterward, saying, "I can promise whatever I want, I’m the coach. No player will ever make a decision for me." Unsurprisingly, Ronaldo was furious about being left out and Jesus’s comments.
The five-time Ballon d’Or winner promptly decided to leave the Portugal camp immediately, missing the wins over Denmark (4–2) and the upcoming home match with Norway.
"After the press conference of the National Team coach, and following a conversation with the President of the Portuguese Football Federation, I decided to leave the National Team camp," Ronaldo wrote on social media. "In due time, I will tell all the Portuguese about the reasons that motivated my departure from the national team, which I always dedicated myself to. Now it’s time to wish good luck to Portugal and all my teammates, without exception."
Ronaldo’s Future with Portugal in Doubt
His absence continues to dominate headlines ahead of the Norway clash, raising questions about whether Ronaldo will return to the national side. This drama unfolds while Portugal prepares to face an Erling Haaland-led Norway team.
Fans Rally Behind Ronaldo
Many supporters have come to Ronaldo’s defense, reflecting his 23 years of service and iconic status in Portugal. Billboards have appeared around Lisbon and nearby areas, displaying messages such as:
- "Thank you Cristiano Ronaldo for everything you’ve done for Portugal. You will always be our captain. Portugal is always with you."
- Criticism directed at Jorge Jesus accusing him of mistreating Ronaldo and having an inflated ego.
The Portuguese Football Federation faces ongoing tension as this saga continues to unfold.
