Enzo Maresca Reveals PSG Coach Said They Were 'Lucky' in Champions League Win Over Man City
PSG's Dominant Victory Over Manchester City
Manchester City endured a tough evening as they hosted defending Champions League champions PSG at the Etihad during their second group stage match of the 2026/27 season. Having secured a 2-0 win away at Porto in their opening European fixture, City aimed to maintain a perfect record early in the competition.
Yet, the night unraveled quickly as PSG surged to a commanding 4-2 victory. The visitors took a strong 3-0 lead by halftime and extended it before City managed two late goals. Despite City's resilience in the second half, it was insufficient to challenge the French champions.
Details of the Match
- Final score: PSG 4, Manchester City 2
- Halftime score: PSG 3, Manchester City 0
- PSG goal scorers: Desire Doue (goal and assist), Ousmane Dembele (goal and assist), Manuel Akliouche, Vitinha
- Manchester City goal scorer: Erling Haaland (brace)
- Shots by Man City: 27 total, 9 on target
- Penalty area touches: Man City 52, PSG 17
Despite dominating possession inside the penalty box and taking numerous shots, Manchester City lacked efficiency in finishing their chances.
Maresca on Luis Enrique's Comments
Enzo Maresca, Manchester City's manager, shared after the match that PSG coach Luis Enrique told him the Paris side was somewhat fortunate to score so many goals.
"We struggled in the first half because we conceded two goals, and when you are inside the pitch, you know that it's already difficult against them, and then you are thinking 'oh my god we are 2-0 down now,' so it becomes even more difficult," Maresca said. "But the second half I think we created enough chances, and we deserve something more, to be honest."But Luis [Enrique] also at the end told me that they had been quite lucky during the 95 minutes, but again we lost and we can learn from that and move on."
The numbers somewhat support this notion as PSG's four goals came from just 1.83 expected goals, though their finishing and key plays, such as Doue's assist for Dembele and Vitinha's midfield performance, were impressive.
