Erling Haaland Ready for Aston Villa as Maresca Faces Selection Dilemmas

Enzo Maresca walked into his Thursday press conference with one piece of clarity and a handful of headaches. The clearest part came early.

“Erling is the only one 100 per cent available,” he said.

For a manager juggling knocks, late tests and a relentless schedule, the sight of Haaland ready to lead the line at Aston Villa is a major relief. The striker, who had been seen limping heavily after the win over Ipswich last weekend, sat out the midweek Champions League meeting with AEK Athens. The rest has done its job. He starts.

Around him, though, the picture is far less settled.

Injuries bite as Maresca waits on key trio

The Champions League tie in midweek doubled as a triage session for City’s medical staff. Marc Guehi joined Haaland in being rested, while a cluster of regulars disappeared from the teamsheet altogether.

Nico O’Reilly, Matheus Nunes and Mateo Kovacic all missed the AEK Athens game as they nurse knocks picked up in quick succession against Ipswich. None of the three is out of the woods yet.

“We have a session this afternoon. They can be all available or not. Yesterday they were all improving, and we'll see this afternoon,” Maresca explained, leaving the door open to every scenario from full return to complete absence.

So the final shape of his side for the Midlands assignment will be decided late. Very late.

Gvardiol to soldier on, Ait-Nouri on standby

One area where Maresca does have a degree of continuity is at left-back. Josko Gvardiol stepped in against AEK Athens in O’Reilly’s absence and is expected to keep his place. The Croatian appeared to pick up a knock late on in that match, but Maresca has played down any serious concern.

On the opposite flank, the uncertainty around Nunes could trigger a reshuffle. If the Portuguese midfielder is not deemed ready, Rayan Ait-Nouri is poised for a rare start on the right of defence, a role that would test his positional discipline as much as his energy.

Those are the quiet battles, the ones fought on the tactics board and in the treatment room. The more glamorous dilemmas lie higher up the pitch.

Foden’s form, Cherki’s craft and a reshaped front four

Haaland’s return up front is non-negotiable. Everything else in the front four is up for debate.

Phil Foden has made himself very difficult to move. Operating in the No10 role on Wednesday night, he tore into AEK Athens and walked away with a hat-trick, the kind of performance that normally nails down a position for weeks.

But this is Maresca’s City, and there is competition everywhere. Rayan Cherki is due to come back into the side and his presence could force a rethink. One option on the table: Cherki takes the central creative role, Foden drifts out to the left, and Iliman Ndiaye holds the right wing. It would give City a fluid, interchanging trio behind Haaland, with goals and guile spread across the line.

The manager’s hand is weakened slightly by the absence of Antoine Semenyo, who faces around eight weeks on the sidelines after suffering a knee injury against Ipswich. His power and direct running would have offered a different route, especially away from home.

Instead, Maresca must lean on finesse, flexibility and the finishing of the one man he knows he can definitely count on.

Haaland is ready. The rest of City’s jigsaw will be assembled in the hours before kick-off in the Midlands.
