Harmanpreet Kaur Steps Down as India Women’s Cricket Captain

Harmanpreet Kaur Resigns as All-Format Captain of India Women’s Cricket

Harmanpreet Kaur has announced her resignation as captain of the Indian women's cricket team across all formats. The 37-year-old first took permanent charge in 2016 after previously leading on a temporary basis. Her leadership included historic wins such as the ODI World Cup and a gold medal at the Asian Games, marking an important chapter in Indian women's cricket.

She shared her decision through a detailed social media post, emphasizing the difficulty of stepping down but expressing confidence that the team is in a strong position moving forward.

"I feel I have done my duty. I gave this team everything I had. I carried the responsibility with pride, and I will always be grateful for the privilege of leading Indian women’s cricket," she said.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has been reviewing the team's recent performances and crafted a future plan. A meeting to assess this roadmap was led by BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia, with Harmanpreet, vice-captain Smriti Mandhana, and head coach Amol Muzumdar present. Harmanpreet’s resignation followed this session, though there’s no official confirmation she was asked to resign. It is expected that Mandhana will succeed her as captain across Test, ODI, and T20 formats.

Harmanpreet’s Reflections on Her Captaincy

In her message, Harmanpreet expressed her willingness to continue playing for India despite relinquishing the captaincy, highlighting her passion for the sport.

"Today, I step down as captain of the Indian Women’s Cricket Team across all formats. This is not an easy decision. It carries years of memories, emotions, sacrifices, and moments that will stay with me for the rest of my life. I have given everything I had to this team and to Indian women’s cricket — my blood, my sweat, my time, and many times, a part of my own game and personal ambitions. There were moments when I had to put my individual performance, my own growth, and what I wanted for myself aside because I believed the team had to come first. As a captain, I made tough decisions that weren’t always understood or easy and sometimes came at a personal cost. Every choice was made to improve the team and help players grow, believe in themselves, and reach their best.I witnessed the lowest points: heartbreak, criticism, doubts, and days when nothing went our way. But I also shared the highest highs: victories, celebrations, the pride of representing our country, and moments making every sacrifice worthwhile.I leave captaincy with a heart full of emotions but also peace because I believe this team has talent, character, belief, and a future I’m excited to watch and be part of.Captaincy ends today, but my love for Indian cricket never will. Thanks to teammates, coaches, staff, BCCI, family, and fans who stood by me through every high and low. Blood. Sweat. Sacrifice. Pride. I gave it all. Now, I’m ready to play for the love of the game again. The journey continues."

Legacy and Future

Harmanpreet Kaur leaves behind a significant legacy in Indian women's cricket. Her tenure saw transformative moments that shaped the team’s identity and competitiveness on the world stage. With Smriti Mandhana likely to take over, the team looks poised for a new era under fresh leadership.
