India Clinches Men's Cricket Gold at 2023 Asian Games in Hangzhou

India's Triumph in Men’s Cricket at the 2023 Asian Games

Led by captain Ruturaj Gaikwad, India secured the gold medal in men's cricket at the 2023 Asian Games held in Hangzhou. Entering the competition directly at the quarterfinal stage, the team showed dominance throughout the knockout rounds.

Road to the Final

India overcame Nepal in the quarterfinals with a solid 23-run victory. The semi-final match against Bangladesh was even more convincing as India dismantled their opponents to advance to the final.

The final against Afghanistan, however, was cut short due to persistent rain. Afghanistan managed 112 for 5 in 18.2 overs before play was abandoned. Since no result could be achieved on the field, tournament rules granted the gold medal to India as the higher-seeded team entering the final. Afghanistan took silver once again after reaching their third consecutive men’s cricket final at the Asian Games, while Bangladesh earned the bronze medal.

Looking Ahead: Asian Games 2026

India heads into the 2026 Asian Games, set across Aichi and Nagoya, as the defending champions in men's cricket. Both India and Pakistan have been granted direct entry into the quarterfinals, offering some advantage but no guarantee once the knockout matches begin.

A recent warm-up match against hosts Japan revealed that India might face tougher challenges than expected. In a rain-shortened five-over game, India struggled to 32 runs, with Shreyas Iyer top-scoring at 16. Japan nearly pulled off an upset but India narrowly won by just two runs.
