Ireland Player Jason Knight Opposes Playing Against Israel Amid Gaza Conflict

Jason Knight Voices Opposition to Ireland’s Match Against Israel

Jason Knight has become the first Republic of Ireland player to openly say the game against Israel should not proceed. His remarks came after Ireland’s 1-0 loss to Kosovo in Pristina, ahead of a team discussion planned by captain Dara O’Shea about the contentious match scheduled for Sunday in Debrecen.

Controversy Surrounding the Fixture

The fixture is stirring strong emotions as it will be played behind closed doors in Debrecen and then again on October 4th in the small Serbian town of Backa Topola, marking an unusual situation since the two nations are not in direct conflict. The protest group Stop The Game has amplified calls for a boycott of the match due to the ongoing devastating conflict in Gaza.

Despite a United Nations international commission accusing Israel of genocide in Gaza, UEFA has allowed the matches to continue.

Knight’s Perspective on the Difficult Situation

"Look, it’s difficult, the manager, and Dara, and Nathan [Collins] spoke well about it, I don’t think the game should be going ahead but it is going ahead," Knight said. "We’ll have a deeper talk about it and what that means, we’ll get our thoughts as a group and go from there."

He admitted the issue has been widely discussed back home in Ireland, while he has been focusing on his Championship football in England. Knight noted conversations among players and senior squad members about possible next steps, emphasizing the importance of understanding consequences before proceeding.

"I am quite experienced. None of us have gone through this scenario before but I’d like to think I’m experienced, thick skin and can get through most things and that is what I will try and do. I’ll try and focus on the football as much as I can. I’ll give my view and my thoughts on when I see fit, but I’ll be trying to focus on the football as much as possible."
