Kent Faces Promotion Challenge After Losing Hasan Mahmud
Kent’s promotion push has taken a sharp blow at the worst possible moment.
Hasan Mahmud, the fast-medium spearhead who has energised their season, is heading home. Recalled by Bangladesh, he will miss Kent’s final two County Championship Division Two fixtures – the games that will decide whether their late surge ends in promotion or frustration.
The numbers tell you why this matters. Hasan, 26, has ripped through line-ups all summer, claiming 30 wickets in just seven matches across the Championship and the T20 Blast. He has given Kent pace, edge, and a cutting new-ball threat. Now he trades Canterbury for national duty, joining Bangladesh’s preparations for upcoming series against Afghanistan, West Indies and South Africa.
Kent knew the risk when they signed him. International cricket calls, counties adjust. That does not soften the timing.
“We're disappointed to have lost Hasan's services for the County Championship run-in, but we respect the decision made by the BCB after constructive talks, and wish him well this winter,” said director of cricket Simon Cook.
A measured line, but it barely hides the frustration of losing a strike bowler just as the finishing line comes into view.
The pressure on the rest of the attack instantly rises. Cook pointed to the resources that remain: overseas quicks Keith Dudgeon and Khaled Ahmed are still available for the last two matches of the summer. They will have to shoulder the load Hasan leaves behind, both with the new ball and in those long, grinding afternoon spells when promotion campaigns are won or lost.
Kent’s Position
Kent’s position makes the situation even more acute. They sit third in Division Two, only two points behind Northamptonshire in second. The gap is slim. The opportunity is huge. And the run-in looks, on paper, inviting.
Two home matches. Both at familiar, friendly surroundings. Both against the division’s bottom two: Lancashire and Gloucestershire.
Those fixtures now carry a different tension. What looked like a perfect launchpad for a late charge now becomes a test of depth and resilience. Can Kent’s remaining seamers maintain the intensity Hasan brought? Can they turn promising positions into victories without the man who has so often provided the breakthrough?
The margins at the top of Division Two are thin. One spell. One session. One bowler catching fire.
Kent must now find that spark from somewhere else.
