Asian Games Cricket Chaos: India and Pakistan Advance to Semifinals Without Playing
Asian Games Cricket Faces Backlash After Rain Cancels Quarterfinals
India and Pakistan reached the men’s cricket semifinals at the Asian Games without delivering a single ball, as heavy rain and soggy outfields stopped play in Nisshin. Both teams moved forward due to their superior ICC T20I rankings when their quarterfinal matches were abandoned.
Quarterfinals Called Off Due to Persistent Rain
Pakistan progressed after their quarterfinal clash against Hong Kong was canceled because of rain. Soon after, India’s quarterfinal against Afghanistan was also scrapped 16 minutes before the toss amid continuous downpour and a wet field. The tournament’s seeding system used ICC rankings from July 23, 2026, meaning India advanced over Afghanistan.
Players and Fans Express Frustration Over Conditions
Afghanistan's Mohammad Akram Zazai expressed disappointment, noting his team was ready and could have challenged India. He said, "We are here for the match but unfortunately it rained. We would have been happy to play here with India – our players are in form." Zazai added that having played twice on the same ground gave them an advantage, but the weather ruined everything. He wished even a few overs could have been played, stating, "We would be happy if five or six overs were played. Our team is good even in short formats. We just wanted a chance to play."
Criticism Mounts Against Asian Games Organizers
Fans directed anger at the organizers for poor ground management and lack of proper equipment to handle the wet conditions. Social media posts slammed the event’s preparation, especially given the steady rain leading up to the matches.
- @Ajmalzadran18: "Absolute incompetence by the Asian Games organizers! They don’t even have proper equipment to dry the outfield in 2026. Because of their poor ground management, the match was abandoned and Afghan Abdalyan is out. Why host such big events when you can’t even manage a wet field?"
- @Crictologist: "Afghanistan and Hong Kong both got knocked out without playing the quarterfinals. Shame!! I thought the pitch was good enough but rain ruined it all."
- @Rajiv1841: "India vs Afghanistan QF abandoned due to rain. They called it off 40 minutes before the scheduled start. This has to be a joke!"
- @Amitsinha4444: "Non-cricket country hosting with no clue how to prepare for cricket matches. Remember the India vs Japan game? The outfield was worse than an international test match."
- @doc_hormone: "What’s happening in Asian Games cricket? All matches abandoned."
Preparation Was Lacking Despite Forecasts
The rain itself was unavoidable, but many feel the organizers should have done more. Nagoya’s weather forecast had been clear for days, yet there were no adequate covers, drying machines, or super soakers ready. This failure left fans and players disappointed.
A semifinal reached without a single ball bowled feels unsatisfying for everyone involved. Cricket deserves better treatment at the Asian Games if it is to remain part of the program.
