Lewis Hamilton Confident in Racing Into 2030s as New African Grand Prix Approaches
Hamilton Eyes Extended F1 Career Amid New African Race
Seven-time Formula 1 champion Lewis Hamilton says he feels different from others as he considers racing into the 2030s. With the announcement of a decade-long deal for a Grand Prix in Rwanda near Kigali, set to debut in the early 2030s, Hamilton reflects on his possible participation.
When asked about competing at the new African Grand Prix, Hamilton joked about needing to prolong his career but was serious in his belief that age won’t hold him back. "You haven’t seen anyone like me in the last ten years," he said. "I’m built differently. There are challenges with age, sure, but people assume your reaction time slows down. Did you see my reaction in the last race? It’s faster than some of the youngest drivers here." He added that maintaining mental sharpness is possible through various methods and that he continues to give his all.
"I can’t say if I’ll want to continue in four years, but I love what I’m doing now and I’m all in for the foreseeable future." – Lewis Hamilton
At 41, Hamilton insists he can still compete with younger rivals in their twenties. Whether he remains competitive in his mid-40s is uncertain, but he wants to avoid staying too long if his performance declines. Last year, many expected his pace and drive to drop, yet he proved them wrong and aims to keep proving it.
Current Season and Future Plans
Currently third in the drivers’ championship and only one point behind George Russell for second place, Hamilton says the immediate battle is not his main focus. "Winning the championship is the only thing that really matters," he stated.
His priority is helping Ferrari improve in the constructors’ championship, having finished fourth last year. The final five races will serve as a testing ground for next season’s car development. Hamilton has been collaborating closely with Ferrari’s head of aerodynamics and vehicle dynamics teams to refine the current chassis and plan ahead.
