Erling Haaland and Man City Stars Could Leave for Free After Guilty Verdict, Legal Expert Suggests

Legal Expert Explains How Man City Players Might Terminate Contracts After Premier League Verdict

Manchester City faces a potential wave of departures from key players following the Premier League's verdict against the club in a financial misconduct case. Barrister Paul Gilroy KC has outlined how stars like Erling Haaland could technically leave the club without a transfer fee.

Guilty Verdict Raises Contract Concerns

The Premier League's independent commission found Manchester City guilty on 114 of 115 charges related to breaches in financial regulations, including the use of sham contracts with commercial partners between 2009 and 2018. This ruling puts the future of many top players under scrutiny as the club plans an appeal but remains officially innocent.

Such circumstances create uncertainty around player contracts, sparking speculation that some might be able to end their deals early based on employment law.

Legal Insight: Trust and Confidence in Employment Contracts

On the Stick to Football podcast, Paul Gilroy KC discussed the implications for City’s squad when asked by Ian Wright about players’ rights if they were unaware of the club’s internal issues.

"Definitely, yes, good question, that, on the players perspective," Gilroy said. "Every contract of employment, whether it’s a footballer or someone who works in a shop, has got an implied term in it. In other words, it’s not written down. And the implied term we’re talking about here is the term of trust and confidence."
"So if I work for you, you and I must have sufficient trust and confidence in each other to enable that relationship to work. If you don’t trust me, or I don’t trust you, or if you call me a liar and a thief on Tuesday, I can’t work for you on a Wednesday - trust and confidence."
"Now, a player could say ‘You have breached the implied term of trust and confidence. You are my employer, you have acted in breach of that term, and that entitles me to say I’m ripping up my contract and I’m walking out.’"

Rival Clubs Watch Closely

This possibility of star players leaving without transfer fees drew lighthearted reactions during the podcast. Jamie Carragher joked whether Liverpool could sign Haaland for free next week, to which Gilroy replied simply, "Yeah, why not?"

Ian Wright also speculated humorously that Haaland might want to join Arsenal, teasing about friendships influencing moves. Though playful, the conversation highlights how this situation could shake up the transfer market if players were allowed to void contracts.

Upcoming Appeal and Future Uncertainty

All attention now turns to Manchester City's appeal deadline, set for Friday, when the club must decide whether to challenge the commission's findings. The outcome will determine any sanctions and influence player futures.

Meanwhile, manager Enzo Maresca and his squad continue focusing on their matches despite the legal storm hanging over the club. Until the matter is resolved, contract uncertainty will keep the blue half of Manchester on edge.
