Manchester United Target Tottenham's Micky Van de Ven for 2027 to Replace Two Key Defenders
Manchester United Eye Tottenham's Micky Van de Ven for Defensive Reinforcement
Manchester United have identified Tottenham defender Micky Van de Ven as their primary transfer target for 2027. The club aims to strengthen its defense, potentially replacing two high-earning players with this single signing.
In recent years, United has focused on bolstering other areas of the squad. In 2025, they strengthened their attack by signing Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo, and Benjamin Sesko. This past summer saw new midfield additions like Andrey Santos, Youri Tielemans, and Carlos Baleba. Despite attempts, defensive reinforcements did not materialize in the latest window, but plans are underway to address this in the coming months.
Contract Situations Fuel Defensive Overhaul
Several seasoned defenders at Old Trafford face contract expirations soon. Luke Shaw earns £200,000 per week but his deal ends after this season. Similarly, Harry Maguire will also see his contract conclude. Lisandro Martinez is currently on £120,000 weekly wages, with his deal expiring next summer; however, United has an option to extend it by a year. Injuries have hampered Matthijs De Ligt, increasing urgency for left-sided defensive options.
Why Van de Ven?
The Dutchman recently signed a long-term contract at Spurs despite back-to-back disappointing Premier League finishes (both 17th place). Yet, with Tottenham struggling again and occupying the bottom spot this season, an exit could become likely, similar to what happened with Cristian Romero last summer.
Van de Ven has earned praise from former Spurs midfielder Jamie O'Hara, who called him "world-class," suggesting he could fit into any top team’s lineup, including Manchester City’s.
Versatility Adds Value
Primarily a centre-back in the Premier League, Van de Ven often plays left-back for the Dutch national team. This flexibility might appeal to United, especially with Shaw’s contract ending and Martinez potentially departing after 2028. Van de Ven could cover both positions, offering experience and quality, possibly replacing two established players with one.
This approach could save United significant funds while allowing investment elsewhere in the squad.
