Manchester City Nears Agreement for Enzo Fernandez as Deadline Approaches
Manchester City have struck an initial agreement with Chelsea for Enzo Fernandez, setting up one of the most dramatic moves of the window with the clock deep into stoppage time on deadline day.
City finally went to the source. After weeks of speculation, club officials opened direct talks with their Premier League rivals on Monday over the 25-year-old, according to The Sun. Those conversations have pushed the deal to the brink, with only hours remaining before the window shuts at 11pm local time.
If all goes to plan, Fernandez will walk into a very familiar dressing room dynamic, but in a different shade of blue.
Maresca reunion drives the move
This is not just a big-money transfer between two English heavyweights. It is a reunion.
Fernandez is preparing to link up again with Enzo Maresca, the coach he publicly backed and whose dismissal at Chelsea he openly questioned. Maresca replaced Pep Guardiola at the Etihad in the summer, inheriting a serial-winning squad and now moving aggressively to reshape the midfield in his image.
The Argentine World Cup winner now faces a race against time. City have an initial agreement, as confirmed by respected journalist Gianluca Di Marzio, and Fernandez is waiting for the signal to head for his medical. Only once he passes that will the move be rubber-stamped.
The pressure is simple and brutal: get everything signed and sealed before the window slams shut tonight. Miss the deadline, and the whole move collapses.
Silence at Chelsea, tension in London
On Chelsea’s side, the mood is very different. Xabi Alonso and the club hierarchy have kept their cards close to their chest.
Fernandez was left out of the squad for Sunday’s match against Brighton, a decision that only fuelled talk of an imminent exit. Alonso did not clear the air. Asked if Fernandez had already played his last game for the London club, he chose his words carefully.
“We'll see. We want what's best for the team, which is why we made the decision against Luton and today, and anything that happens before Tuesday evening, we need to be aware of how things will develop,” he said.
That is not a manager drawing a line under speculation. That is a manager bracing for late movement.
Alonso admitted Chelsea are “preparing for all scenarios” and insisted that from Wednesday onwards he expects to have a squad strong enough “to compete in all the Premier League matches.” The message was clear: Chelsea will adapt, with or without Fernandez.
Old wounds, new chapter
For Fernandez, the potential switch to City carries an extra emotional charge.
Back in January, he did not hide his frustration when Chelsea dismissed Maresca. Speaking to Mexican network TUDN, he openly criticised the decision.
“I don't understand it,” he said. “Sometimes there are things we don't understand as players, and how and in what way they try to manage matters.”
He described Maresca’s exit as “a departure that hurt us a lot, especially in the middle of the season, as it cuts everything off suddenly.” The midfielder spoke of an identity lost, a system that had given Chelsea structure, even if results fluctuated.
“We had an identity. He gave us a system, although according to the nature of football, things are sometimes good and sometimes bad. But he always had a very clear identity when it came to training and playing,” Fernandez added.
Now that same identity is being exported to Manchester, with City moving to give Maresca one of the players who understood his methods best.
The deal is close. The relationships are already there. The only opponent left is time.
