Novak Djokovic Faces Tough Path at Basel Open in Bid for ATP Finals Spot

Novak Djokovic is set to continue his effort to qualify for the ATP Finals by competing at the Basel Open, where he received a wildcard entry. This ATP 500 event begins on Sunday and features a strong lineup including Stan Wawrinka's final professional match.

Strong Field at Indoor Hard Court Event

The draw includes notable players such as Ben Shelton, Arthur Fils, Taylor Fritz, Rafael Jodar, Stefanos Tsitsipas, and Holger Rune. Djokovic needs to close the gap on Jodar in the race to Turin, where the ATP Finals take place, but his chances have dimmed with the draw revealed.

Challenging Matchups Ahead

Djokovic’s opening round will be against Ugo Humbert. If he advances, he could face Jan-Lennard Struff in the second round. The quarterfinals look even tougher, with a projected meeting against seventh seed Alexander Bublik, who has won three of his nine titles on indoor hard courts. Djokovic defeated Bublik once during the 2021 Davis Cup Finals.

Should Djokovic reach the semifinals, his likely opponent would be top seed Ben Shelton. Their last encounter was at the 2023 US Open, where Djokovic beat Shelton in straight sets to reach the final. Shelton has made significant progress since then, recently reaching his first Grand Slam final at Flushing Meadows.

Potential Final Showdown

If Djokovic reaches the final, his most probable opponent is Arthur Fils, currently sixth in the ATP Finals race. Fils, along with Flavio Cobolli and Daniil Medvedev ahead of him, is also fighting to secure a spot in Turin.

Standings in the Race to Turin

  • Arthur Fils: 6th
  • Flavio Cobolli: Ahead of Fils
  • Daniil Medvedev: Ahead of Fils
  • Novak Djokovic: 10th
  • Others competing for qualification: Alex de Minaur, Taylor Fritz, Tommy Paul, Rafael Jodar, Frances Tiafoe

Djokovic’s Track Record

Djokovic last missed qualifying for the ATP Finals in 2017 due to a wrist injury. Apart from that year, he has qualified every season since 2007, although he did not participate in 2024 and 2025. At 39 years old, he holds the record for the most ATP Finals titles with seven.
