Rio Ngumoha's Future: Liverpool Secures Young Talent as Arsenal Lags

Arsenal have been circling for months. Bayern Munich’s name has been in the rumour mill too. Yet as the noise grows around Rio Ngumoha, the 18-year-old winger seems to be heading in just one direction – deeper into Liverpool’s future.

The Premier League champions have been hunting a new left winger for 2027. Morgan Rogers slipped through their fingers. Vinicius Junior stayed put. Gabriel Martinelli departed and no like-for-like replacement walked through the door. The gap on that flank has become a running theme around the Emirates.

Liverpool, though, never treated Ngumoha as part of that market.

From the summer onwards, the message from Anfield has been blunt and unwavering. As Fabrizio Romano put it, Liverpool’s stance was clear: Ngumoha was not leaving, not for sale, not even up for discussion. They see him as Liverpool’s future, one of the standout young talents in his position anywhere, and they have behaved accordingly.

That conviction is now being backed up with paperwork.

TEAMtalk revealed earlier this month that Liverpool and Ngumoha’s camp have reached an agreement in principle over a lucrative new contract. The framework is there; the fine print is being worked through. Football Insider’s Pete O’Rourke reports that talks to turn that outline into a binding deal are progressing smoothly, with no major obstacles expected.

Inside the club, there is no sense of panic. Quite the opposite.

“Liverpool are desperate to keep hold of Ngumoha,” O’Rourke explained, adding that the player is happy on Merseyside and “set to get regular starts this season.” That last part matters. Pathway, not just pay, often decides where a prodigy plants his flag.

Ngumoha appears convinced by what Liverpool have put in front of him: minutes, responsibility, and a clear route into the heart of the first team. The club, for their part, believe his long-term future lies at Anfield and are acting like it. There is optimism on both sides that the deal gets signed and sealed.

While those negotiations move towards the finish line, Arsenal watch from the outside.

The London club’s need is obvious. Martinelli has gone. Earlier in the window, they swapped Leandro Trossard for Christos Tzolis, but when the Brazilian left, they chose to stand pat rather than force a signing. That restraint has now fed the swirl of rumours linking them to Ngumoha.

Romano laid out the logic. Arsenal did not officially bring in a direct Martinelli replacement, so any elite young left winger with an uncertain contract situation becomes a name on their list. If a window opens in 2027, 2028 or beyond, Arsenal would be among the clubs ready to move. So would several major sides from abroad. Interest in Ngumoha will not be a one-club story.

For now, though, interest is all it is.

Liverpool are in active talks with the teenager. Conversations over contract length, financial terms and sporting guarantees are ongoing. The club still need to “get it done,” as Romano put it, and strike the right balance on every point that matters to the player and his representatives.

The pressure is there, but it is controlled pressure – the kind that comes with having one of the most coveted young wingers in Europe on your books and a clear intention to build around him.

Arsenal, left scanning the market once again for a long-term solution on the left, look set to miss out on another target in that role. The champions will keep looking for opportunities, as they always do. But unless something dramatic breaks in negotiations, Ngumoha’s next decisive move will not be a switch to the Emirates.

It will be a signature that ties one of the game’s brightest wide talents to Liverpool, and raises the question every rival will be asking over the coming years: how do you prise him away from Anfield once that ink is dry?
