Sahibzada Farhan Named Pakistan’s New T20I Captain, Replacing Salman Ali Agha

PCB Chooses Sahibzada Farhan as Pakistan's Next T20I Leader

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is set to relieve Salman Ali Agha from his T20 International captaincy duties, appointing Sahibzada Farhan as his successor. This change comes amid Pakistan’s preparations for a long-term vision targeting the 2028 T20 World Cup.

Farhan, who has already captained Pakistan’s squad at the Asian Games, appears poised to take on the role permanently. The upcoming three-match home series against Sri Lanka will be an early opportunity to evaluate his leadership over multiple matches, not just one-off tournaments.

Planning for the Future

According to reports from Geo TV, the PCB wants to settle on a core group of players early and allow the captain to grow into his role steadily. This approach contrasts with Pakistan’s usual pattern of frequent leadership changes following poor performances.

Farhan was named captain when the board selected the 15-man squad for the Asian Games back in June, with Abdul Samad serving as his deputy. The series against Sri Lanka at Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium, scheduled for October 9, 11, and 13, will test how well Farhan manages the team under longer-term conditions. Coach Mike Hesson supports this plan but insists that Farhan’s batting form and leadership during the Asian Games will influence any firm commitment.

Salman Ali Agha’s Struggles Prompt Change

Salman’s recent dip in performance appears to have triggered the leadership switch. Despite having led the T20I side for some time, his inconsistent form has pushed the management toward fresh options.

The captaincy change coincides with a squad reshuffle. Experienced opener Fakhar Zaman is likely to return to the T20I setup, while senior pacers like Shaheen Shah Afridi and Haris Rauf are expected to remain out of the picture for now as the focus shifts to nurturing younger talent.

This rebuilding phase prioritizes developing depth and youth across the squad with a clear eye on 2028.

Farhan Embraces the Responsibility

“If I am given the permanent captaincy, I will definitely accept it. But right now, my only focus is on the Asian Games and my responsibilities as captain of this team,” Farhan told reporters in Japan.

A Rare Display of Patience from PCB

Pakistan’s habit of frequently changing captains at early signs of trouble makes this multi-year commitment to Farhan stand out. The board seems ready to provide stability and give him time to build a settled team—something that teams like England and India have demonstrated leads to eventual success, even through tough periods.

Still, using Farhan’s Asian Games performance as the main gauge feels odd if this truly is a long-term project. Judging him after just a few matches against weaker Asian opponents may not be the best measure. It would be wiser to back him fully through the Sri Lanka series and beyond before making a final judgment.
