Saudi Arabia Pauses $2.5bn Neom Stadium Project Ahead of 2034 World Cup

Saudi Arabia Suspends Construction of Neom Stadium

Plans for a $2.5 billion stadium in the futuristic Neom megacity have been put on hold, dealing a blow to Saudi Arabia's preparations for hosting the 2034 FIFA World Cup. The stadium, designed to seat 46,000 people, was meant to be a highlight of the first 48-team World Cup held by a single country.

Neom Project Status and Impact

According to MEED Projects, as reported by Reuters, the Neom stadium's construction is now suspended indefinitely, raising doubts about the completion of the 15 stadiums Saudi Arabia promised FIFA when it was confirmed as the sole host. The venue was planned to stand 350 metres above ground within The Line development, part of the kingdom's ambitious Vision 2030 plan.

Shift in National Spending Priorities

The halt reflects a change in government spending priorities under Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. Yasir Al-Rumayyan, governor of the Public Investment Fund (PIF), stated earlier this year that The Line project, which includes the stadium, is no longer a top priority before 2030.

Official Statements and Alternatives

Despite this setback, Saudi officials remain confident about their World Cup preparations. The Saudi World Cup 2034 Hosting Higher Authority said significant progress continues on other tournament infrastructure, and alternative venues are being developed. FIFA has praised the kingdom's overall tournament proposal as "absolutely incredible."

Economic Challenges Affecting Plans

Saudi Arabia’s economy is facing pressure with the finance ministry forecasting a budget deficit and a 3.6 percent drop in real GDP due to falling oil revenues. Regional tensions and attacks near Aramco facilities by Yemen’s Houthi rebels add to the difficulties. Still, hosting the 2034 World Cup is a key goal for Mohammed bin Salman to boost the country's economic profile and global reputation.
